Is there any documented reason why the 71 and 72 Ikes were not included in those year's sets? It seems to me that after a 35-year absence, the mint would have wanted to 'advertise' the denomination.
Yes I remember the Brown IKE'S for 10 dollars and the blue IKE's for 3 dollars, not sure about the price on the second one. Yes More MONEY.
Well, I guess that's possible. Knowing the mint today, it's highly possible. But then why wouldn't they have continued the program? I was hoping it was something along the lines of "the designs came too late in the year" or something like that (kinda like the 99's SBAs). So it all goes back to money.
Still have a $10 Brown Box Ike that I got as a Christmas present that year. I should have asked for something else, instead.
Not really. After the SBA, I think this is one of the ugliest obverses made. Got caught up in the hype and begged my Mom to order one. $10 bought a lot good coins back then. I would have been better off getting some higher grade early Lincolns or Indians for my set.
The Ike came out in 1971 after the Mint and proof sets were already sold. I'm not sure why they didn't include them in the 1972 mint sets. They probably weren't in the proofs sets because they were still using up the five coin proof set holders. That tended to happen with proof set holders. That is why the 1979 set has the SBA in a clear plastic ring so it could fit in the large size dollar hole in the leftover six coin holders. Or why the 1982 proof set has a treasury medal in it, to fill the SBA hole in the left over holders.
