Something that isn't a tetradrachm for once, an ant. of Florian. He's been high on my want list, but at a budget price point. Finally got one and it is a budget example, but I didn't want to pay a lot for him. Either way, post for Florians. Florian (276 A.D.) Æ(S) Antoninianus O: IMP C M AN FLORIANVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right. R: PROVIDEN DEOR, Providentia standing right, holding two ensigns, facing Sol standing left, raising right hand and holding globe; star in lower centre, mintmark ΚΑ·Γ·. Serdica Mint 22.6mm 3.56g RIC 111; Hunter 21; C. 71
My only Florian is similar but spells out Annius on the obverse and is officina B. Of course the common references omit this one and I do not have access to the more specialized works so I have no idea if it is there or not. Anyone have Estiot?
Wow @Mat ! Big score on the Florian! That is a great looking one! They are not as easy to capture, congrats. Super reverse, pops out well, and the star is great! Good eye! Mine: RI Florianus Jul-Aug 276 CE AE23 Concord-Milit
Nice coins everyone, and thanks. And mine is the third example for RIC temp #4480 http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/4480?idType=4480
Good addition @Mat . I have two. The first one shown is one I got because the portrait reminded me of Carausius and also because the second coin shown is in such poor condition; FLORIANUS Silvered Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP FLORIANVS AVG, radiate, cuirassed and draped with paludamentum bust r REVERSE: CONCORDIA MILITVM; Victory stg. r., holding wreath in r. hand and palm against l. shoulder, facing Emperor in military dress stg. l., r. hand outstretched and holding long sceptre in l. hand Q in ex. Struck at 4th officina, Cyzicus mint, July-August 276AD. 4.4g, 20mm RIC V-1 116, RIC Online #4533 FLORIANUS Antoninianus OBVERSE: IMP FLORIANVS AVG, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right REVERSE: CONCORDIA MILITVM, Victory standing right presenting wreath to Florian standing left. Q in ex. Struck at Cyzicus, 276 AD 2.9g, 21mm RIC 116q
Nice catch. A budget Florianus isn't something you see everyday I bet My example, from Lyon Florianus, Antoninianus Lyon mint, 3rd emission, 1st officina IMP C M AN FLORIANVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right seen from front (A) TEMPORVM FELICITAS, Felicitas standing raight, holding caduceus in right hand and cornucopia in left hand. LOL, you must get all those Lyon / Lugdunum Ancients very easily... just run out to your local Bank and get a roll of them...
I don't have Florians too. I almost picked up one few days ago, but I had to decide between the Florian and an antoninianus of Magnia Urbica. No financial conditions to take both of them...
It's really impressive! What is very strange is the fact that Florianus ruled 10 years before Carausius' ascension. And struck in Cyzicus! Very interesting! Congratulations, Bing!!
Pretty decent for a budget example, mat. I was happily Florian-less, until a mixed group lot brought one my way in box-checker grade.
Just picked this one up from Frank's auction (Frank's photo). It's the same issue but from a different officina at the Cyzicus mint: Florian, AD 276 Roman billon Aurelianus Cyzicus, officina 3, AD 276 Obv: IMP FLORIANVS AVG, Bust right, radiate, cuirassed and draped with paludamentum Rev: CONCORDIA MILITVM, Victory stg. r., holding wreath in r. hand and palm against l. shoulder, facing Emperor in military dress stg. l., r. hand outstretched and holding long sceptre in l. hand; T in exergue Refs: RIC 116; MER/RIC temp #4530; Cohen 15; CBN 1982-3; RCV 11853; Hunter 20
