I picked up this one in the member auctions on FAC. The flan is a little ragged, but I thought it had lots of eye appeal. The most compelling reason to buy it was that it is a coin of Sulla, general and once dictator of Rome. This will be a great addition to my historical figures collection. Please post your coins of Sulla.
@Orfew; I had to look up the attribution as I've not seen an example of this coin before this: L.Sulla. 84-83 BC. AR Denarius (3.86 gm). Thanks @Bing Sorry for not including the attribution. I like your examples very much. I have almost bid several times for an example of your first type.
Very nice!! I noticed you went after this one...so I resisted the urge to throw another bid on it. Cool posts @Bing---I have one of yours too!! My two denarii of Sulla:
I didn't bid on it since I tried my luck on several of the others first...but when they went higher than my maximums I was thinking about your denarius. Congrats--It went to a good home
Wow, what a fantastic parade of Sulla denarii...! I've been many light-yearsbehind all of you...! I have none of it...
it's illegal to post them if you don't have them... it's illegal to post them if you don't have them...
I noticed you were bidding on that one and I was rooting for you. Glad to see you won it. IMHO this is one of Sulla's more interesting types and I think you did really well.
Great coin @Orfew ! Somebody took a couple bites out of THAT cookie! YUM! SULLA: Love that guy's conviction. I like that that he RETIRED when he was done. He did not hang around to muck it up after he was done making changes. I love Marius (Sulla's rival) for what he accomplished, but he got mean and angry later in his career, and he did not just "step aside". Kinda hurt his wonderful legacy from his younger years. ..this was remedied as of last nite i'm happy to announce....i'll 'legally' post it when it comes in!
Not really a coin of Sulla but it does feature a portrait of the dictator struck not quite thirty years after his death. Denarius of Q Pompeius Rufus 54 BC Obv. Head of the Consul Q. Pompeius Rufus right. Rv head of the Dictator Sulla right Crawford 434/1 RBW 1544 3.63 grms 18 mm Photo by W. Hansen Sulla had a long and colorful career. Apparently when he was on his deathbed he discovered that a man that he had lent money too was withholding payment in the hope that Sulla's death would absolve him of any need to repay. Sulla had the man brought to him and strangled the life out of him. All this excitement was too much for the old man and he died almost immediately afterwards no doubt in a state of sheer biss.
