Hurricane Preparedness; Are TPG slabs water-resistant or waterproof?

I live where we think Hurricane Irma is going to be heading (yay fun), and I'm starting to prepare. I have very limited space in my safe, and I'm wondering if NGC/PCGS/ANACS slabs are water resistant, or possibly waterproof. The safe is a 'waterproof' safe, but I'll be loading it up with raw coins in ziplocks, and I can fit a whole heckuva lot more raw coins then slabbed coins. So I'm thinking of putting the slabs in ziplocks, and then in a waterproof container, and securing that to something.

While I don't expect for the house to disappear, I'm trying to prepare the best I can, just in case we have flooding similar to Harvey. At this point, we live in a no-flood, non-evacuation area, but ya never know what these things will bring. If we do have to evacuate, I'll grab as much as I can.

    Any advice appreciated.

I can tell you from my experience during Katrina, they are not. I don't believe that any major TPG claims to have waterproof slabs. Good luck to you and your family. Stay safe.

Wow truly sorry for your future troubles. I won't be much help on the subject but maybe mail them to a trusted friend or family member who will keep them safe? I understand shipping would be alot but better safe then sorry, and those things are wicked and crazy ya never know with them, when's it supposed to hit?

    Thanks,
    Jacob

Jacob, That's a great idea! Heck, a large flat rate with insurance would be well worth the cost. I have family in NY, OR, and WA, all of which are great locations.

OR is burning down, don't mail them there. Good luck with the hurricane.

The newest generation of the PCGS slabs are water resistant/water proof to an extent. Obviously hurricane type flooding will make most water seals fail, but under more normal conditions they do provide some level of protection. The other TPGs and older slabs are not though

I do not believe they are waterproof. I have never plopped any of my coins in water to find out, though :O. Stay safe and hope everything goes okay...I would recommend shipping your coins to a family member, relative, friend, etc. that is not in Irma's path.

Spoke with a close friend in Oregon, and if need be, I can ship to her. Most recent track puts Irma on the east cost, which is good for me, but worse for all involved (more people). I'll still get hurricane force winds, etc., but I think we'll be ok if this is accurate. We're not in a flood zone, so with it going up the east, I doubt I'll have much to worry about, but you never know. Know I just worry about those on the east coast!

The most important wealth is the health/life as you too probably know.
So, my recommendation is: leave it as it is and to save yourself and your family first, keep one cent coin in your pockets. (yes, it is like a joke...)

I've heard ideas to store things in the dishwasher or freezer for safekeeping, but I'm not sure I'd do this with valuable coins...maybe expensive china or other fragile items.
