So I'll start off by saying this was an impromptu purchase. That's what happens when you get to drink during your best friends wedding ceremony. Anyways I took a gamble on this and won. The stain on the reverse is unfortunate but from the pictures the strike appears strong and the fields nice and "lustery".

It is raw but I'd like to hear your opinions on grade. Doesn't appear to be cleaned but not sure if the stain would give it a details grade. I'm guessing MS range, maybe 63?

Just to make sure that I'm clear on the story... you drank at your friend's wedding and then went off and bought coins? That could be a great new tradition!! :D

As for the nickel, I like it and I probably would have bought it myself for the right price. I find the humble Shield Nickel a little under-rated. Poor guy. Grade-wise, uhm, I'm really no expert, but the stain, some scratches and the wear on the upper part of the date may drop it down a little. I wouldn't be surprised if it's an MS-something, but I'm going to wait for more informed folk to chime in.

That one is tough, if you give that coin an acetone bath, and the stain has taken the lustre in the area, it probably would also be a details coin.
I am at Au58 with the wear on the 5.

The reverse scratches and spot really hurts it imo. On the bright side, i see some cool doubled letters in the motto. Not sure if that makes it value added or not

Longacre doubling looks cool ,adds no value.

    This is a AU58 maybe a Ms60 but doubtfully a 61

As always I appreciate the feedback. The family and I just finished our 11 hour drive from Ohio to Atlanta, hence there replies. To clarify my buddy is a good ol redneck so drinking was obviously required at an outdoor wedding. I had been watching this piece on ebay and put a bid in; the auction ended right in the middle of the reception. I'll admit I do somewhat regret my bid because I was hoping someone would outbid my max of $130. So would the recommendation be to not dip it? If it was sent in would the stain warrant a details grade?

    That's the owners choice,
and, a gamble in my opinion.

Oh I completely understand, what I paid plus the cost of grading is probably not far off the market value. I've never submitted a coin before so I'm mostly curious to the process.

    AU details, scratched.

BTW, definitely not a proof - proofs don't have die cracks like this coin.

I'm hoping the scratch will not be as bad in hand - I'll find out once someone goes down to get the company mail.

Well, i hate to disappoint but the coin has long since been sold.....regretfully.
I rarely save photos of ex-coins due to them being imaged on my phone
FWIW i recall there were a few cracks in and around the date too. I thought it was common due to the metal composition
