So I showed it to Bill Fivaz. His in-hand opinion was original, GORGEOUS, and MS-65 RD. :wideyed::eek::jawdrop:

    Time to send this in!

PCGS gods have responded. UNC RB cleaned.

I got it back in hand today. I still see no signs of a cleaning. All of the supposed hairlines go under the devices. I have not yet found a single hairline on a device. I think PCGS erroneously assumed the die polish was evidence of a cleaning.

But their mistake has rendered this coin worthless.

Possible but not necessarily. You see it is equally if not more likely that what you have assumed are die polish lines are actually hairlines. But let's just remove that from the equation. You see there are several other things other than hairlines that can clearly indicate that a coin has been harshly cleaned. However, one must have the experience necessary to be able to recognize those things. Otherwise they won't see them at all.

Not all cleaning involves physical intrusion. It's quite possible they decided the color could not be original, and that only a chemical cleaning could have resulted in it.

More cynically, and more likely, they decided to CYA regarding a coin whose value would reach into four digits had they called it 65RD.

When I saw the first set of pictures I did not think cleaned, but possibly questionable color. Tough really to say from pictures alone. You can always crack it out and send it into NGC to see what they say.

This was a possibility, but I thought the reverse lines were hairlines so I recommended not spending more money on it. Of course, it could eventually end up in a straight holder, but who knows? I've tried coins up to 4 times before, even spent $500 at a show on 5 coins, NONE of which upgraded. Never again. I'm more conservative now with what I send in and how many times I send it. If something goes multiple times, I have to be 99% sure of it, and even then I'll only send economy.

That was my initial stance, but I saw enough evidence to the contrary to convert my opinion. I tried to prove they were hairlines, but I could not.

The Morgan I sent in with this coin has obvious (but isolated and subtle) hairlines after seeing it in hand again. I agree with PCGS's decision of "cleaned" on that one.

That is what @C-B-D thought happened. But PCGS was going to go with RB before they changed their mind.

I think the color made them question the coin.
