Hi all, In addition to my fine Greek coin today, I also received another fancy bit of business in the mail today. I do not even seen this denarius type offered for sale that often. I don't think that the Ceres coins are offered for sale nearly as often as PVDICITIA, VESTA, or VENVS issues so I am happy to add one to the Julia Domna collection. A good price made the purchase even better. AR Denarius Julia Domna Born circa 170AD - Died 217AD Augusta: 193 - 217AD Issued: 198 - 202AD 20.0 x 18.0mm 3.58gr, 1 h O: IVLIA AVGVSTA; Draped bust, right. R: CERERI FRVGIF; Ceres seated left, holding wheat ears and long torch. Rome Mint RIC IV, vol. 1, 546; BMC 10; RSC 14; Sear 6532. hjb-ancientcoins 391870991373 8/30/17 9/1/17 Click on this link to see this coin in my Forvm gallery along with the other Severans. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=41431&pos=1
That is a very nice Ceres. They are less common than the reverses you list but there are quite a few other types of equal or greater rarity. Mine is similar from Rome. They also come from Emesa. and Laodicea.
Nice ones, @nicholasz219 and @dougsmit . I have one, too! Very nice Ceres nicholasz219, and some great coins on your Forum gallery. Congrats on a nice collection.
Looks like you made a great choice with that lovely coin. I have no Ceres reverse Domna, but here are a Cybele, Pietas and Venus.
i had saw one for sale from Germany and the seller had mislisted it as another coin. i was going to bid on it and got busy doing something else. it went for less than $4.00 US.. i was so upset that i'm still not over it
lol i agree.. i've been wanting one of those coins with that reverse for a while now.. i think he had it listed as a Iulia Mamaesa if i'm spelling that correctly.
Does anyone know if that Cybele reverse on the throne with drum and lion(lions) appear on any Roman coins before Hadrian? I have seen one or two on a Hadrian coin but none before his reign. It seems that Faustina II made this reverse very popular. As seen here on this dupondous.
No, not before Hadrian. She appears on a few Republican issues, but not enthroned with drum and lions. There is the M. Volteius type where she's in a biga of lions, however.
I would add that these issues of Hadrian were only on cistophori from eastern mints (Cybele, after all, was an eastern goddess): RIC 463 and 488, and an issue depicting Sabina, RIC 533. You can see several Roman Republican issues and various provincials portraying Cybele in this thread.
Thank You guys for the info! - Would Hadrian have to have approved those cistophori tets or just one of his assistants? Yes she is an eastern goddess but it is interesting that she was considered the mother of Zeus and his bros etc...
This is the only Cybele that I have, and it is RR. NOT with Lions or Drum... but a cool upward FOOT as an Obverse device...
