First Show as a Dealer...

So I got a PM from Ardatirion suggesting I set up a table at the Red Rose Coin Show next week. It's something I've been considering for a while, except I don't think that crowd is interested in ancient coins in the least, and I fully expect to lose $100, which is the table rent. However, I think it'll be fun, and my wife is going to provide an extra set of eyes for security, and Bill will be there, along with Kerry Wetterstrom, so it should be a pleasant social experience, even if I don't sell a damn thing.

I went to the local coin shop and asked them if they had any trays for sale - they gave me a handful to borrow, which was quite generous of them. One of my pet peeves with these sorts of displays is that often the coins are not clearly labeled in large, bold print, and there are no prices. I realize that most dealers mark their coins up a bit so they can give a "discount" when it comes time to pay, but at least give me a ballpark figure. I don't want to have to wait for you to finish with another customer who's taking forever, just to find out you're asking an arm and leg for a coin I was hoping would only cost a leg.

Anyway, here's my solution. I printed up some larger cards with very general attributions and prices. The flips and inserts with complete attributions are under the coins...

I also plan to have several trays with bargain bin coins, in the $5 to $20 range, to demonstrate that one can collect ancient coins on a slim budget, and I'm going to have some freebies to give away to kids, and a drawing for a free coin.

If y'all have any suggestions or criticisms, please tell me! I'm all ears. I don't really care about making any money on this thing, but I would like to put forth a very professional presentation.

The real question is, should I go with the centurion costume, or the toga?

Sounds cool. I wish it was in range of where I live because I would go. I have yet to see a friendly ancient coin dealer that would be willing to help me find a cheap coin that fits my budget. Oh and nice touch to give away coins. You might end up with a regular Customer that way.

Let me work up to it. Let's see if I can sell a few ancient coins to a bunch of US and bullion guys.

First of all, congrats JA. You deserve it. Can't wait to meet you one day at a FUN show in Florida when you are a big time dealer. Don't forget to give me a little discount for being a customer since the beginning. :)

Dude, I say this with all respect, but if I saw you wearing that costume toga, I'd die of laughter. For $250 these guys will dress you in an authentic Senator's toga, and not something that looks clownish.

They also have tunics, sandals, and other proper Roman gear to look the part. Well worth it if you ask me. I might save some money and spring for this for Halloween.

Meh...talk to my wife. She's the one that likes spending $250 on a bed sheet.

Anyway, I'm getting carried away here. All I wanted was to congratulate you on your first show, and I think your coin selection there is superb. I say you'll sell at least 75% of those coins.

Hey! I would probably buy some of those ancients... nice uncluttered and information loaded display! I completely agree about dealers who don't display prices. I don't even stop twice at tables that don't openly show prices, pretty much for the reason you cited. I also don't want buying coins to resemble buying cars, so just show me the money already!!

What an enticing display! You'll convert a few Morgan Dollar collectors to the dark side!

Oh, and for security reasons, wear the centurions outfit. Someone might think twice before trying to steal from you.
