I was looking through this collection i got from a while ago, and saw this date on the coin and wondering if this coin is worth much, or your opinions? I'm only a beginner and not that great at grading or telling if they were cleaned.

here it is. ( I dont know why it came out this size, but atleast you get detail)

It looks like coinage from the Italian revolutionary provisional government but the inscriptions are all funky.

could you tell the grade on it. Or could you tell if it was cleaned, from the picture?

Not to be a nay sayer but I think its not a real italian coin...it modeled after a Revolutionary Government coin but the inscriptions are odd...the imagery is correct, not inscriptions...so I cant even say what it is...

I guess what I was trying to say is that this is not a coin but a token of some kind modeled after an Italian Revolutionary Government issue coin....it is copying (poorly) this coin:

and these real examples are VERY expensive and sought after coins...

Maybe someone here might know why this cheap copy was made and what the funky inscription is all about but I CAN tell you...this is not a coin.

If I am not mistaken, 1 lira in those days are minted in silver and 5 lira is definately in silver. Unless yours is an ultra rare pattern coin, I would be suspicious if this was a coin at any stage. At best a token or some sort. The legend itself is not in any words that I can recognize immediately... neverthelesss interesting piece.

Very strange item. Probably some sort of token or tourist copy, but it COULD be a pattern.

There have been some threads about coins like these at CT, where the design is the same as a real coin, but the writing is nonsense. An idea was put forward that these pieces are made for profit from those who think it might somehow be 'real'. Or perhaps made for fun. The fabricator would be legally shielded since it isn't strictly a counterfeit.

Since I have a background in linguistics, I'm going to say with about 99% certainty that the 'script' on that token is complete and utter nonsense. :D

Eh, it's at least interesting. Couldn't hurt to find out maybe where it came from and why it was made. There's still quite a bit of mystery surrounding it.
