Anyone have a good book to recommend other than this one?

This was a factor for me as well. Packing and moving a shelf and all its books was more work than any of the other furniture we moved with when we did our last cross-country move. I try to remember that every time I consider buying another physical book.

Perhaps I'm a book snob, but I don't consider I own a book until a copy is sitting on my shelf. I understand why people need or want ebooks - I would be lying if I said I read one all the way through.

A vinyl collector once told me there is a big difference between having a 1000 albums stored on your phone or computer versus having a 1000 vinyl albums or CDs sitting on your shelves. I think it's the same with books.

However, I'm straying off topic - either of the Michaels (Crawford or Grant) mentioned above will do just fine. Grant has a particularly popular writing style that goes down very well.

Thank you all for your posts! I appreciate your sharing your experience.

I have moved to digital for novels and light reading, but any time something approaches the category of "reference" I want a physical copy. I have gotten rid of 90% of my books over the past ten years, so, in the event I have to move again I can afford to move what's left.
After 15 moves since marriage in 1971 I have stated, only half-kiddingly, that the next move will happen when they come with a gurney.

I sometimes struggle with history books. They seem to always be either too short or too long. I often mispronounce everything I have read.

I recommend ancient history podcasts by Dan Carlin. The series is Hardcore History. The three-part King of Kings episodes, on the Achaemenid Persians, is particularly good if you are interested in that period because there isn't much on those guys that isn't an introduction or a thesis. The latest episode is on Caesar's wars in Gaul.

The episodes I mention are free. They can be played on your phone with a free player like Podcast Addict. There are other episodes on modern an ancient history and some cost $2. These podcasts will greatly improve long car rides.
