wow, learn something new everyday, "since 1992 pennies have been made of copper-plated steel" and here I've been telling people they are made of copper plated zinc.

Nope, it's legal as long as you don't do it to fool someone in any way, like turning a penny into a dime by plating it, and then trying to pass it off.
i saw a van on ripleys believe it or not that was covered in cents like that. every time i see that i wonder how many wheats are in there. i also saw on that show people that make clothing out of dimes. hmm. there was a bar that used to be around my town a long time ago. the counter, tables, everything was covered in cents. i think they said like $10,000 or some ridiculous amount of cents. the cents were under glass.
