Have you ever had a feeling on a coin that for some reason, you really shouldn't buy it ? I was REALLY wanting to buy this coin today, but something just wouldn't let me do it. http://cgi.ebay.com/1857-FLYING-EAG...ryZ11942QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I don't know if it was the start of corrosion or what. Have any of you ever had that type of weird feeling when buying a coin ? Tell your story.
Even the dog looks fake. The dog is named Mr Louie and you know if a seller has to resort to posting a cute picture of Mr. Louie, something don't smell right.
Howdy rotobeast... just got over that feeling but with a high grade "Brown Back New York Note"...glad I passed on that one, no matter how nice it was... RickieB
When it comes to a coin like a high grade Flying Eagle I want to see that coin in person or buy it from a dealer I REALLY know. I own but one high grade FE and bought it from a guy I've been dealing with for years. Just so happens my last purchase was from him. A high end AU 1876 20 Cent Piece. Good move passing on that one Roto.
You have to learn to trust your gut instinct. If something feels wrong, it's better to pass. Also, if you feel really really excited about a coin, it's sometimes a good idea to pass up that purchase also because you may not be thinking clearly about it. The safest mental state to be in is the middle ground where your knowledge and experience tell you the purchase is okay.
Just stick to coin shows, it is better to be patient and wait to be sure of what you are getting than to gamble on ebay. Plus coin shows are generally cheaper because you can bargain with the people.
Exactly what I do. Of course many don't have the advantage of numerous and close coin shows. I have at least 3/Month around here. Also, flea markets with coin dealers. Even at coin shows there are those coins that I think, coulda, shoulda, woulda. Just don't know. Later it feels good that I didn't and then also, there are those times when I say Darn, why didn't I. The only nice thing is if I don't, I'll eventually forget the thing. If I do buy something not sure of it will be here to haunt me for a long, long time.
Whenever I get that feeling I move on. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I lose. That is all part of the game.
I think it's a good idea to follow that instinct. Sometimes a coin just feels wrong, even when it seems to be a good deal. Usually, when something seems too good to be true, there is something wrong with it.
