I was really happy to get this one. I already had one of the same listing (ric 128) but its ANI so different enough for my to get this one I really like the look of the cape on the soldier and 'barbarian' and the overall style. Billon centenionalis of Constans Antioch, officina 3; 348-350 CE 4.4 g, 22 mm D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust left, globe in right hand. FEL TEMP REPA-RATIO Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand, advancing right, head left; with his right hand he leads a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree. The spear points downwards, between the soldier's legs. Star in upper left field, AN Gamma in ex RIC VIII Antioch 128; LRBC 2615 This is my other (ANI): Feek free to share any FTRs
Both are good but the newest one is great. I don't have any RIC 128s just a lonesome RIC 126 perhaps I need to do something about that. A couple of points to note on your new coin. I think the depiction of the emperor cloaked seems much scarcer that not cloaked but that is a minor thing. I can't recall seeing the captive having a detailed, elaborate cloak before. I love it. Bill Welch shows one Antioch that hints at a cloak on the captive but yours is clear. Does cloak mean Winter I wonder... A fantastic find and one I am truly jealous of.
Thanks all It was definitely a surprise to see the barbarian. I have only seen a few like that as well but not as detailed, as you've said @maridvnvm . (one being bills :shown below) Haha codependency: excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner, typically a partner who requires support due to an illness or addiction LOL That kinda sums us up when it comes to FTRs
Wonderful detail. Hmm, I may join the Randy/Martin 'support group' one day soon....but for the rest of this year I'm still hopelessly addicted to Greek and early Roman types I simply must have---if only I bought that Powerball lottery ticket in Massachusetts!!
If your luck is anything like mine, you would've bought the ticket before or after the winning ticket was sold.
I see a slight ridge that shows in the photo just right of the straight line hanging down from the hut. A proper answer would require removing some of the sand patina.
You guys are real eagle eyes, and at 3:30 in the morning no less! I have never seen the caped barbarian, and had not paid attention to the soldier until this morning. Thanks for showing us the way Randy, and with such fine material!! Now I'm on the lookout for a caped barbarian (drool-drool). Like Martin I have only an example of 128 from Antioch, and it is not showing anything interesting for either figure. Following your lead Randy and looking at other mints, I have not seen a caped barbarian, but I have seen extended capes on the soldier. This one from Trier is most like your OP, Randy, with the lines of the soldier's cape extending on both sides of his figure all the way to his knees. This example from Cyzicus extends down and is seen on right and bottom, but not so much on the left. This example from Constantinople shows the wrap of a short cape down the right side to about the length of the skirt. In looking at the barbarian in each of these I saw no cape, but I did notice some variation in the treatment of his hair and headgear, which caught my attention. At Trier he is bareheaded with a Beatles cut. At Cyzicus (off delta) he wears a bowler hat and sports a long pointed beard. At Constantinople his hair extends down his neck and is bound with a band around his head. I can show you other hair styles for the barbarian if you would like to see them, but these are the only ones I saw that accompanied the variations in the soldier's cape.
Out of my 32 hut coins all bar one show the soldier with drapes across the shoulders but not always elaborated further. I have only one where the Soldier isn't draped at all.
Cuirassed but not draped. That's interesting. What do you make of this? Cuirassed but not draped? It is the only example in my collection with the spear pointing up.
Thanks all, and great coins! @lrbguy please do I don't have any. Thats pretty cool, an excellent coin!
