Why PayPal only?

    Help me here folks.

Why do so many sellers ask for Paypal only?

I know that it is a fast way to get the money, but a money order is good as cash.

Even though your bank may require clearing time, I have always paid by money order, but notice the paypal only more & more often.

Someone is offering a nice JFK that i would be interested in discussing, but I have to pass on the Paypal only.

    Frank,

If you really want the coin, I have a PayPal Account! You could send me the Money Order and I could pay for the coin via PayPal.

Or contact the seller and see if they'll accept a money order. Sometimes if you show a willingness to work with them it'll pay off.

There are many counterfeit money orders out there these days. While they get bounced before you may send the item it can cost you. My bank charges $35 on a refused check or money order. If the money order is bad you certainly aren't going to collect the fee from the buyer.

I recently posted my first auction and I think I know why.
On the initial auction set-up, there is NO OTHER option for payment other than PayPal.
I had to go back in and edit my auction to be able to accept money orders.
I also had a problem putting in a First Class Mail postage.
It quite easily lets you select Priority Mail.
Me thinks eBay has a deal with the US Post office.

I'm not saying that all the people out there with high shipping and PayPal only are noobs like me, but it's a possibility with a lot of them.

I've never had a problem checking the box that says "Money Order" or "Personal Check," but then, I rather like not being stuck with the 3% fee in exchange for waiting a few days.. Haven't had a problem yet.

And eBay does have an agreement of sorts with the PO -- they even have Priority Mail boxes with eBay stamped on them and such.. PayPal (owned by eBay) has an agreement with both UPS and USPS to ship their packages, so you can ship easily, and it interfaces with My eBay to reflect that an item has indeed been shipped.

Speed is really the only reason I can think of to use PayPal. Money Orders are cheaper, and you don't have to worry about a potential chargeback (unless, of course, you cash a fraudulent MO...)... But then, I know some people that don't want to spend any time rushing to and standing in line at the bank, whereas I work in a building where my bank is just down stairs, so really, no time is lost depositing a MO/Check...

I deal strictly with US Postal money orders when buying or selling. Most sellers are okay with that even when they say Paypal only. I haven't been turned down yet.

    My three reasons:
    1. Speed: you don't have to wait for a check to be mailed and/or a personal check to clear.
    2. Security - PayPal helps to resolve disputes. Buyers and sellers don't want to spoil their status with PayPal.
    3. Security 2 - you don't have to give any personal information (like a credit card number or even your real name) to the other party.
    4. Convenience - money orders have advantage 3, but it's a pain in the neck to go to the post office and fill them out. Sellers don't have to deposit or cash anything.

I only take paypal and it's because of speed and convenience.
I used to take personal checks and money orders but I stopped about a year ago. My business took off and it was a nightmare keeping track of who paid by check waiting for it to clear and then putting the item aside and wait to ship. Now it's streamlined and as my business level increases more and more ...it's a blessing to take only paypal.

I stayed away from PayPal for years. I paid for everything with either a personal check or a money order. Eventually I began to see many auctions refuse to accept personal checks as a form of payment. They either wanted a money order or PayPal, or just PayPal. That bites when it is something you really want, so after a while I came around.

I started off by giving PayPal a credit card with a $500 limit to minimize my potential exposure. Since then laws have been passed that limit your liability($50 max?) if there is any fraud. Many "better" credit cards also have a zero liability clause in their user agreement.

    So far so good.....

I only do paypal when possible...its quick and easy and I have a credit card I use just to buy coins with and it allows me to use that CC...I will do it another way if I have to but prefer to just quickly pay for the item through paypal.

I have never used Paypal as a seller or buyer. Course I don't do to much of either these days. Suppose it would be a lot different if I were a power seller.
On the rare occasion I've sold a higher dollar coin I requested payment by Cashiers check or Postal money order. Never had a problem with that. Not U.S. bidders send me U.S. currency.

I have emailed "paypal only" sellers and they've never had a problem with a Postal money order.

Usually I pay by check and have no problem with someone holding it. I figure I've lived without that piece for 45 years so what's a couple more weeks?

In 9 years I've had two bounced check. One from Canada hence the cash only from out of country. Other I was able to recoup including NSF fees.

Guess I'm old fashioned but I don't like my "financial" information floating on the internet.

That's exactly the point of PayPal. Nothing is floating around the internet except your email address, which I presume is already floating around the internet if you use it.

Even with personal checks you're giving people your bank account number and routing number. That's just a few small steps away from being able to set up electronic transfers from your account.

I personally think PayPal is safe. On Ebay, i use my Visa Buxx card, which is a debit card that I can stop adding money onto or cancel the account if something goes wrong. I have never had any problems with PayPal, and I feel it is so easy!

Good point Dreamer94 and wow I do use my email. Never thought of it that way.

On the other hand I never get spammed for my account # or routing #.

It really doesn't matter how one does transactions I guess - someone is out there hoping to steal your info.

Damn shame isn't it? Maybe I'll just go back to Postal money orders.

I really don't know. My son uses ebay and paypal all the time. He told me that is all he will accept. He set me up with a paypal account and an ebay account. Many of my friends do the same. I have no idea how it works, what to do with it, never used it, probably to old to learn. My son says it's the only safe way to do buisness on the internet. I really don't have any idea of why at all. I find it easier to just not use either.

I take paypal and USPS money orders only. Just stopped taking checks.

It's 2007, we don't drive to bank anymore but about every other week. The post office cashes the USPS money orders as I pick them up. If it's no good, I find out right away ( never happened ).

We don't take paypal over $250 now, I just paid paypal $40 on 1 coin 2 weeks ago and will not do that and $40 to Ebay also. $80 in fees and commisions is just too much.

Security is top notch with paypal I agree, and so is annonimity. No such security with money orders as a buyer, if seller won't refund, your out of luck. With paypal, if you get screwed, they will force seller to refund. Honest sellers have nothing to fear with paypal.
