Because it's rainbow toned. See the picture above? I sold a rainbow ASE like this for $250 last year. Market on these toners has gone down, but it's still strong.
I still have 9 of them... guess I could change mine out, but the point was to keep making money while just building a "nice" set for free.
I bought this lot for $75 and sold an Ike, the Indian Cents, and 2 of the large cents for $90, so I get to keep the 1964 Silver Kennedy for my free 7070 set! Here is a picture of the lot, and the free Kennedy:
Since I only paid $80 for this lot, and sold 3 of the coins for $173, I used some of the profit to buy this Morgan for my free 7070 set! I nabbed this 1884-O at auction for only $33! Below is the picture of the lot I bought and resold, and the free Morgan for my set:
Two new additions this week. First, I bought this set of 3 Indian Cents for $8 and sold them for $30. So I used the profit to buy this 1902 freebie for my 7070 set. Next, I bought this spotted 1948-D Franklin Half at my local coin shop for $9, sold it for $21, and used the $12 profit to buy this 1957 Freebie Franklin Half for my 7070 set! Here's the one I bought at the coin shop: The free one:
I know it's a little early, but you're moving right along, and doing well. At first I thought this to be a near lifelong endeavor, but you're gittin er dunn. Kudos.
Where are you buying and selling all these coins? I just don't see how you can turn 3 common, circulated IHCs into $30. I'm not doubting you or trying to knock you, I just agree with what someone stated above, from the beginning I was thinking this is going to take forever, but you moving along very quickly and turning a solid profit on all of your buys.
I bought the 3 Indian cents on eBay for $8 total and listed them as Buy-it-now separately and people bought them. Well, actually one of those 3 is currently at auction as a part of a collection, but the other 2 already sold for $22 shipped, and the 1902 only cost me $15.88. So I just assumed to count the profit from the collection towards my new 1902 "freebie." However, I cherrypicked a 1880 FS-101 Indian Cent last Saturday at my local coin shop for $50... which will sell for $500 or so eventually, so the free Indian Head Cent is easily funded with these buys. But to get deeper into your question, of how to do this, take this one for example. I won this last night for $76.01. Blurry pics, but look at the full rim dentils and the RTY of LIBERTY that can still be seen. Also, it was listed in the wrong category, which eliminated all the buyers looking for a 20 cent piece. I take risks, yes, but I'll bet you doubling up on this coin will be easy, perhaps even tripling up, even based on the awful pics. I believe I can even see luster on the reverse! I'll post actual pics of it when it arrives. My theory/challenge is that if I practice knowing what to look for, I'm careful with how much I spend, and I look for varieties and cherrypick, I can find a complete set, fully funded by flipping coins of the same type.
I have FOUR DANSCO Type albums at present. One holds my nicest high grade specimen of each type; one holds my worst circulated specimen of each type; one holds a counterstamped variety of each type and finally one holds a holed specimen of each type. Since I rarely see holed or counterstamped or heavily circulated specimens of commemorative halfs I use those four holes for colonials.
I would have been cautious to bid more than that due to unknown problems. It arrived cleaned, just as I had feared. But high VF detail nonetheless.
Great thread! I really like this way of completing a type set. For my type set I didn't really plan to flip the coins, but I did with the Reeded Edge Half Dollar. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to pick up a replacement yet.
That's a big part of the challenge. I flipped a 1917 type 1 standing quarter the other day, but the profit was $89 gross. Not enough to buy an XF or AU problem free one for my free set... so I have to flip another 1 or 2.
Very true. My flip was a bit of a challenge from this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/assign-a-grade-capped-bust-half-dollar.297311/ I wanted to see if the coin would sell (since a few people mentioned they wouldn't even make an offer). Well, it did at $105 and a certain someone basically guessed the final sale price. Lately though I have seen lower graded details examples selling for more than I paid for the one that sold. But I am determined, so another example is just around the corner!
FYI, everyone... I have a lot of different type coins for the 7070 at PCGS for grading. Economy, so some of these will take months to flip and actually turn into "free coins" for my 7070. It seems to be going fast, but I haven't filled any slots for the expensive coins, really.
