In regards to the Ed bashing, I assume it's just a persona, and shows a little creativity and imagination and fun. I enjoy his posts with a grain of salt.

image1.JPG Reverse pic from an eBay listing- I increased the brightness to see the die cracks. The coin is straight in the holder.

EDIT- here's a better TrueView reverse pic:

While I certainly respect your position, it is my belief that some of us are more concerned with the damage someone openly (and ridiculously) claiming to be a "professional" grader, and hotshot "dealer", with an openly advertised willingness to "help others" could potentially cause to those who know no better. It's really little different from a certain member here (not involved in this thread) who steals auction house photos, runs them through photoshop autocorrect, and posts as part of their "collection" as a way of bolstering their "expertise" claim.

If the "Ed bashing" saves even one person from this disaster-in-waiting, it was all for the greater good. JMHO, of course.

Excellent comparison, and one subtlety vindicating to boot. ;)

I understand what you are saying, and most people realize he's not what he pretends to be. And for the uniformed there is a danger/problem.
But if this site is all about transparency, then maybe we all need to start using our real names, instead of screen names.

My point wasn't about transparency, but about fact and respect. Should it become more important that a man-child be allowed to pretend, even when at the risk of hurting those most of us would like to help, what's the point of portraying this as an educational discussion forum? Detecto turned this place into his personal playground, and while there was great entertainment value to his antics, the forum suffered because of it. The same can most certainly be said for precious little Eddie/Edie here, well, short any sort of redeeming value.

Are you really claiming that the pictures of that ancient in your post are the same coin that's pictured next to it NGC encapsulated?

    And the actual NGC coin

TheMont, posted: "And I'll say it again, you need to have a coin in your hands before you can tell if it is genuine, a picture, not matter how good, is not enough to tell unless the coin is a really poor counterfeit."

No disrespect here but I strongly disagree with MOST of this statement. On a scale of 1 -10 your counterfeit is a 6. It can be detected by a photo IF the authenticator has a diagnostic file to match up PMD that was transferred to the fake die and then to all the fakes struck from it. A skilled authenticator can see things in images that others cannot.

"It fooled me, several dealers and every coin club member who looked it over."

I doubt ANY of these folks could get a job at a major TPGS.

"I posted pictures of an Athenia Owl that a good friend took and they were excellent shots. Half of the ancients guys were sure it was fake and half thought it was genuine. It caused quite a back and forth. It turned out to be genuine."

Since NGC slabbed it, I'll defer to their opinion. Just know that there were characteristics of a cast counterfeit plainly visible on your coin. Most obvious were the raised, round, lumps in the recesses of the head. The crystallization looked "funny" too. Nevertheless, the ancient is an example of a coin that should not be authenticated by photos.

Michael K, posted: "Again, the key markers are the die cracks on the reverse and the 10 degree counter clockwise reverse die rotation. People are fixated on the obverse, but the tell tale authentic signs are on the reverse of this coin."

I will repeat: Lincoln Cent Resource:"Check for two faint die scratches leading downward from the left bar of the T in Cent to establish authenticity"-The CherryPickers Guide Fourth Edition Vol. 1 pg. 122. The reverse is also slightly rotated counterclockwise about 10 deg.

I doubt the counterfeiters are getting the die cracks and the reverse die rotation correct.

I was going to blast this post before doing some research. It turns out that A VERY FEW of these coins do have die breaks. Examples of this are very rare! What the writer is possibly calling a die break is a "broken" scratch in the die (commonly seen on the reverse at five o'clock between the stalk and the rim.

BTW, any decent C/F will pick up the die breaks on a coin. So far, the mark I've described has not been "picked-up" on decent counterfeits.

Hey TheMont, WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THAT ANCIENT? TWO DIFFERENT COINS!

Could be but the image is so out of focus. At one time I think folks were taught to be careful of these with thin letters. We need a better image.
As already posted, the reverse is the key. It has to have the die polish lines at T in CENT. It's tough to catch these lines in an image. It's easy to see in hand with a glass. I'm sure NGC got it right.

I sent it NGC and I have to accept what NGC determined. Am I disappointed? Yes. Did I lose money, actually my grandson did, he's going to inherit my collection. Actually I'm more disappointed that the '72 certified as Brown, I thought I'd get a red/brown.

My wife just called me to tell me that e-mails are disappearing from my inbox. I'm out of town and using my smartphone and I got a good laugh. She didn't know if I picked up an e-mail on my smartphone it would delete it from my laptop.

I don't care who posted it, but I'm the one who had a counterfeit '55 and this link taught me a lot of markers to look for the next time I see a 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln. That's one of the purposes of this forum- Education.

I'm out of town and I used the OneDrive on my computer to link the laptop's Word to the phone's Word to put the raw and slabbed versions of the Athena coin on my phone. I put the wrong slab on my phone, I have two slabbed Athenian’s and picked the wrong one to upload to show my friend. And if you're so curious, I also have a raw Athena, so to help you out, that means I have three, two slabbed and one raw. Happy now? By the way, we tend to use real words on this forum, not the abbreviations used on text messages, at least that's what I was told when I joined.

(we) who? You dont seem to have alot of freinds and i can see now for obvious reasons. I was mearly asking not attacking you. Get some thicker skin. If i wanted to attack i would have asked did you “borrow” the slab image like the 1955 DD image. Finally i will use whatever abbreviations i choose to use. As for your counterfeit it seems karma for your wonderful disposition you show to people which is probably not isolated to this forum.
