I am sure there are not 1909-S VDB's in there. Those are British "pennies", not American "cents".

Nope, it's legal as long as you don't do it to fool someone in any way, like turning a penny into a dime by plating it, and then trying to pass it off.

 

American pennies are legal to deface, Canadian ones are not.

 

Imagine walking by a powerful electro magnet with a pocket full of those.

i saw a van on ripleys believe it or not that was covered in cents like that. every time i see that i wonder how many wheats are in there. i also saw on that show people that make clothing out of dimes. hmm. there was a bar that used to be around my town a long time ago. the counter, tables, everything was covered in cents. i think they said like $10,000 or some ridiculous amount of cents. the cents were under glass.

 

at wall-drug in SD some of the counter tops have silver dollars under glass
