Odd 1983 penny. I though ddo because all the splitting but not sure because it looks like something else may have caused that look. Any idea? The damage on the word IN is caused by what ?
Looks like it could possibly be a very late die state of this vaiety: https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/lincoln-cents/1983-ddo-1c-fs-101-1365/ with a bubble in the copper plating under IN. Conversely it could just be die deterioration as suggested by conder.
They have best answer option. They also need dumbest question option cause I thought about that after I asked and felt pretty dumb. Haha. Thanks for not taking a nice shot at me on that one cause I would have deserved it for sure. Lol.
I try to never post anything that could be perceived as demeaning or as a verbal attack. We're all hobbyists in the same field and we're all learning as we go. There's no reason that I can see to make someone feel foolish when you can be helpful and constructive instead. Most especially since I myself am still relatively new to numismatics and am quite fallible.
That's a great attitude to have. I'm the same way. L.A.Geezer had questions on photography and I am one of the worst at taking photos but I gave him as much knowledge as you all have given to me. I don't chime in on much because I'm uneducated on the matter but I don't mind helping in any way possible when I can. Thanks again
I'm all but positive it isn't DDO-001. As Conder said, it's die deterioration. It's a form of die deterioration that is mostly seen on copper plated zinc cents. It referred to as a "ridge ring". Scroll down to the glossary entry for ridge ring here: http://www.lincolncentforum.com/terminology-list-q-r/
