What do you think of www.Coinbay.biz ? I'm sure that the crowd there will give Ebay a run for their money. You don't even need a credit card to be registered on Coinbay. If you don't live in America, click 'International' in the drop-down tag under 'State'.

There is no real site that can easily rival against ebay. Even yahoo, with its supposely free listings etc, have not managed to close the gap differences. If there aren't many sellers, there will not be many buyers. If there are not many buyers, there will not be any sellers and vice versa. To build a site that rivals ebay is practically impossible unless you start to offer buyers / sellers something, but that will likely cost a fair amount.

Just went over to have a quick look as I am always interested in healthy competition.

As GX said, the key problem is going to be getting enough of a "critical mass" to be of value-- and I mean of listings, not exclamation points and capital letters. (You'll see what I mean if you look.)

The name "Coinbay" might attract attention from eBay's legal staff as well.

Here is a good one----good low listing prices and I've sold some things and gotten just as many bids as I would have on Ebay.

One - count it - one world coin offered.

How exciting to know that I can bid on a currently circulating Turkish coin and wait only 26 days to find out if I have been outbid.[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

So much better than EBay, where I would have to wade through 1,929 offerings in my area of special interest.

I hardly think that Ebay got their thousands overnight---this site has just opened this year and still needs people to list items and get it going---

No selection to speak of and a lot of fluff. I'll keep an eye on it but there isnt anything in my price range or worth a hoot there

I am willing to check them all out. Yes, it will take sellers to attrack buyers and vise versa. eBay started so some guy could help his wife get rid of Beanie babys.

Any alternative to ebay wil be worth looking into for me for sure.

In the 15 months since Aidan posted his claims that the site would give EBay a run for its money, the total number of sellers has increased modestly, but there are page after page of listings for months-long auctions with zero bidders.

Coinbay.biz is indeed the joke that 09S-V.D.B called it!

Google is one company I see that is in a position to give eBay a run for it's money. But they will have this challenge,

How to offer free listings without attracting scammers?

Hey, Roy, great to hear from you. Hope all is well and that you are enjoying your "retirement."

It does still seem to be difficult to compete with the 500 pound gorilla. In my other main hobby of model railroading, some "Yard Sale" sites that are fairly heavily moderated are getting some traction, but it's on the order of tens of listings per week vs. thousands of items at any given time.

Once the truly better mousetrap is built, I'm looking forward to switching-- but there is no free lunch. (How's that for mixing metaphors?!?)
