There was a time that Decius attracted extra attention since the Pope he killed was Fabian but today you have to be a certain age to remember why Fabian was a name of note (or why someone might like or not like him).
I read Gore Vidal's novel Julian when it came out in 1964. At the time I loved it, and when I read the 4th c. historian Ammianus Marcellinus afterwards, I was struck by how closely Vidal followed parts of Ammianus. Once I retire and have time for reading I want to read all the books on Julian that we have in our department library. Attached are a few of my Julians.
A decade ago I read a good historical fiction book about Julian. How much is accurate? I'm not sure but it was a fun read.
Thanks. I love a fun read so I will try this book after I finish the 12 book series I am reading. Currently on book 11.
Hi everybody !! I've 64 siliquae of Julian II, and it is very hard to choice one for this tread. Maybe this one, a RIC0 of Arelate, see the observ'legend with -S NB CAES in place of -S NOB CAES. Only one coin (bronze FEL TEMP REPARATIO) with this new legend in the RIC. JULIEN II - ARLES - RIC VIII 264-Var Silique, 358-360, R5 A/ D N IVLIANV-S NB CAES Dominus Noster Iulianus Nob caesar, Notre Seigneur Julien Noble César Buste à droite, drapé et cuirassé, tête nue. Poids : 2.14 gr, Diamètre : 19.35 mm, axe des coins : 1h RIC VIII 264-Var, RSC manque, FERRANDO II MANQUE Special to Voulgaroktonou : your siliqua of Julian Caesar mint of Antiocha is interresting. Is ther a dot on the left of ANT• (•ANT• - RIC 185) or is it realy a new issue ANT•. I was considering this new issue a few year ago, but never found an evidence. Can you control it for me please ? If it is one new, may I put this with your picture in my databasis of Siliquae (www.siliques.fr) ?
Here are a couple from my collection. I tried to pick examples not already shown. The AE1 is from Heraclea with a stylized portrait that shows a look I would call "determined." His anger against the Constantinians for the decimation of his family seems to have had that effect on him. For this AE2 I chose a dinged example from the mint at Rome precisely for the unusual mintmark spelling out the city name, as so many of the other mints had done (probably under orders).
Since this thread started I bought an APIS Bull type a couple weeks back so here it is, wanted one for a long time: Yep, those are my fingers...
Late to the party... But here is my favorite Julian II coin. He's an interesting figure, I wish his coins as Augustus were a bit more varied. Julian II Siscia, 361-362. D N FL CL IVLIANVS P F AVG Diademed and helmeted bust of Julian II to left, with a short beard, holding a spear and shield, and wearing robes. Rev. VOT / X / MVLT / XX within wreath ASIS between two palm branches. RIC 415.
Sallent, this is a great idea for a thread project! Looking forward to reading it and seeing all the related coins. John
