I just won this in Frank's recent auction. I really love the Reverse of this beautiful Roman Republic Denarius... It seems a serene scene with Roma sitting on a pile of shields, 2 birds on an open field, and the She-Wolf with Romulus and Remus... It just struck me as beautiful aesthetics compared to many Roman Denarii from the Republican era... this is one of the few Denarii from this late period in the Republic that NO MONEYER is on the coin. Makes for a more clean design. Roman Republic Anonymous AR Denarius 115-114 BCE Rome mint 19.5mm 3.8g Winged and Crested Helmet on Roma bust facing right, X (denomination) behind, ROMA below Roma Seated r on shields, spear in hand, 2 birds l & r in field, she-wolf with suckling Romulus & Remus Crawford 287/1 Sear 164 I understand that 200 years later this reverse was featured on a Titus Aureus. Please feel free to post any of your cool Republic coins...
Wow, what a superb coin. Easily one of the best reverses I've seen on any Roman coin. I don't have anything that cool, but I do like my newest Roman Republic denarius a lot. So here it is again. C.N. Lentulus denarius
Very nice Alegandron, haven't seen to many with that reverse, I agree a very interesting coin with great eye appeal.
That's sweet! Really nice style! Here's one of my favorite RR: Roman Republican AR denarius L. Mussidius Longus Rome mint, 42 BC 17.0 mm; 3.5 gm Obv: Bust of Marc Antony's 3rd wife, Fulvia, as Victory, r., draped. Rev: L MVSSIDIVS LONGVS, Victory in biga, r., holding reins. Refs: Sear 1517; BMCRR 4229; RRC 494/40; Sydenham 1095; RSC Mussidia 4; Banti Mussidia 613.
Great eye appeal. That's another one I would love to add to my small but growing collection of ancients.
Beautiful! I love these anepigraphic and nearly-anepigraphic types and have one like yours. Oddly, I have no memory of bidding on it! At first I thought the invoice was wrong but my bidding history showed the bid. It wasn't on my planned bid list so I guess I was so charmed by the coin that I bid when it hit the block. No regrets Roman Republic, Anonymous Rome, 115-114 BCE AR denarius, 20 mm, 3.91 g, 10 h Obv: Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind, ROMA below Rev: Roma, helmeted, seated on two shields, holding spear before her, she-wolf standing right at her feet, head turned back, sucking Romulus and Remus. In left and right fields, two birds flying towards her. Ref: Crawford 287/1 I should do a video of this coin because the still image does not do it justice.
Yours is gorgeous @Alegandron. I don't have an example of this coin. M SERGIUS SILUS ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius OBVERSE: EX S C ROMA *, head of Roma right REVERSE: horseman galloping left with sword & severed head held aloft, Q below horses leg, M SERGI below, SILVS in ex. As always, terrific posts everyone!! Since I also have an example of this type, I have to LOVE the OP Interestingly, I've noticed quite a few appearing at various auctions of late. It seems all my Republicans are my favorites, but these two show enough variation that they are at the top of my list..... A denarius of MARS with the fighting soldiers reverse; Q Thermus, 103 BC: And this one of the moneyer 'Fonteius' and the Galley reverse:
This is indeed one of the prettiest RR types, tough to find fully struck. I waited a long time before finding the right one. I actually was the underbidder on this same coin in 1982. I never really considered another example until this one finally came back on the market:
