I just gave away a 1967 Israeli specimen set to my favorite clerk at the post office, who's into such things, but alas, I have no pictures, so I'll change it to USA or 1989, next.

    USA or 1857.

(This 1857-O dime was in an NGC VF30 holder. Nice, for a relatively inexpensive coin. Something about those Seated coins with the mintmarks above the bow, inside the wreath, appeals to me, for some reason.)

Cool seated liberty! I'm not very well acquainted with the series (yet), but I like the reverse design. Maybe it has to do with the prominence of the mintmark... We'll stick with US...

This was my first detector find from the 1800s. It was only my second silver coin found with a modern detector, in August of 1993, and is the find that got me hooked on metal detecting.

    USA or 1899, next.

@Mad Stax - your 1903-O dime inspired me to post this one. I've dug a couple of 1903-O Barber dimes as well, but since I still haven't gotten my two decades of detector finds imaged yet, there aren't any pictures of those right now.

It's always gratifying finding free treasure, especially 19th century treasure!
I gotta get a detector at some point..
Here's one I found, in a reject tray, not quite as awesome as digging a coin out of the dirt, but it's pretty remarkable how lustrous it is. Currently residing in my type set. Unfortunately my camera doesn't capture luster well so this is the best I could do.

That's a nice find. I'll take free silver any way I can get it!

This one knocked the wind out of me when I dug it up. It came in as a shallow "quarter" signal on the detector's meter. I was hunting a vacant lot where an old Victorian house had reportedly burned down in the 1950s.

Based on the detector signal, I was expecting a brown, grubby clad quarter. Seeing a big silver coin fall out of the plug I had cut in the red clay soil was quite a surprise. First thing I saw of the coin's design before I cleaned the clay off it was those sun rays, so I thought it was another Walking Liberty half at first. But no- it was better than that.

This is the only Oregon Trail half dollar I've ever owned. I've never bought one. Only dug one!

(Maybe I'll get a decent photo of it one of these days.)

So that's 1926 or USA, next.

Wow, that's epic! Pulling a silver commem outta the dirt... who would've thought!?!? You've made some serious finds over the years, do you have some kind of 6th sense, like a metal polarity or something? :greedy:;)

This one was a gift from a bank teller I know, someone deposited in their account after their father passed, apparently he was quite the hoarder so they didn't want to spend the time bringing it to an LCS (as they had a huge pile of 'junk' to sort through)
So it is we'll skip forward a year

That was indeed an epic find. But no, I am not especially talented as a detectorist. Just occasionally lucky.

I was the least successful of six diggers on my 2013 England trip - those guys put me to shame. And my local dig buddies routinely run circles around me, too.

I'm really quite average as far as detecting skills go, but I do have some sense of what constitutes a potentially good site.

Let's stay in the USA with "lucky finds", and go back to 1926. :)
