Interesting request. 30 years ago I was working on my stamp collection thanks to the Hunt brothers. I'm not sure I have any coins still in my possession that I've owned from that far back. My only candidates were sold off 10-15 years ago when I shifted from 20th century to 19th century. There's an outside shot with some of my Jefferson nickels (the only set I haven't been able to sell -- yet).
Bought this in the early 70's, for $100. I was definitely early in my coin collection, and also ended up collecting stamps instead.
Jeeze, gold was still under $100/oz in '71 right? I remember a few IBM salesmen buying gold at $ 130 and sayign it would boom. I didnt believe them.
Definitely under $100, though this was bought as bullion. I was pretty young, my dad was driving me to stamp and coin shops. I will guess that IBM stock would have been a better investment than gold, but I didn't look it up.
I don't know. Sold the little stock I bought through employee stock purchase plan to pay for TV repairs, childrens tuition, car repairs, etc. Then, two years before I would be vested for a pension, I left IBM. Schmardt guy, no?
I bought this coin for $50 in 1964 when I was in high school from a Coin World dealer. United States $20 1927
Cool thread idea, unfortunately I can't contribute. I've only been collecting for 4 years and I've only been alive for 27. Keep em coming though, very cool coins with neat backstories.
Same boat as @Mad Stax, been alive for only 31 and started collecting roughly 20-22 years ago. But still cool stories and great coins!
We found this in my Grandmother's coffee can that she kept her change. After I found this "odd cent", I asked for, and was given to me by my Grandmother July-1968: My first coin... US CWT AE Cent 1863 Eagle - Carpeles Dry Goods Groceries Waterloo Wis Coin no 1
I walked into a coin shop in March 1986 trying to entertain myself and the kids while the wife was shopping at a mall. I saw those coins from my childhood, and that’s how it all got started. I bought this circulated dime that day. I keep records of all my purchases. This is #1 This is #4 from my 1st coin show, May 86. I’m a type collector, so this is the first of 2 Morgens that I ever bought. From my second coin show, #18, July 86.
Thank you for the kind words. I had collected SEVERAL CWT's, HTT's, Love Tokens, odd-type US, Trade Dollars, etc. Sold most of them 30 years ago, and moved into Ancients... my first purchases, a few key sentimental items, and, of course, this Civil War Token from my Grandmother will stay with me, and will be passed on to my Grandkids!
