Just wandering if there is any way to clean this medal up a bit, or at least improve its appearance. Acetone didn't help it any. I have never used Verdi-Care. Do you think it would help, or am I wasting my time? Below is some info I found on these medals, but this one looks to be a different color. And I cant tell if it was ever suspended from a ribbon. There is no eye on it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anschluss_Medal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudetenland_Medal Any info about conservation, or these medals would be much appreciated. Edit: sorry wrong forum... please move this to world coin...
The corrosion is very thick and heavy. Any conservation effort will result in a cleaned medal IMO. The metal under the corrosion will be a different color (bright copper) and could also be pitted. While using VC would show some improvement, it is not near strong enough for complete removal.
I agree. In this case, an attempt at conservation is likely to make it look even worse. You'd really have to strip it down to bare metal, and by the time you did, what would be left would likely be hideous. At least with the verdigris on there it has a "relic" patina not unlike some ancient coins. While that patina is not as handsome as it is on some ancients, I don't find it totally objectionable, either. Leave it as it is, I say.
Thanks for the input. I didn't think I could restore it, l was just hoping to improve it's looks without it looking cleaned.
