That must have been an exciting (if frightening) experience for your grandmother!

My paternal grandmother once told me she had saved some "French gold Napoleons" for her grandchildren in a safe deposit box in Havana (she said for me in particular, since I'm the grandchild that ended up collecting coins - though I wasn't born yet when Castro overthrew Batista in Cuba in 1959). But of course all of the contents of those Yanqui safe deposit boxes got "nationalized", so there were no gold Napoleons for me after all - at least until I grew up and bought my own. She did give me some other numismatic treasures for my childhood collection, one of which is still in the family.

I just wonder how much numismatic items were lost due to the coup... Great story!

No, I was merely responding as requested :) I have no interest in the contest.

Well, agree with the 'how do you pick your favorite child-I-mean-coin' difficulty!

This one is almost always in my top 5 though. It's one of my favorite Japanese designs--the double 'hoo' bird. This particular coin has a spectacular toning (or tarnish for those so inclined) where the red really accentuates the design feature of the rising sun.

Long story short I have a 6 pound bin of world coins I found CRH or in the coinstar reject bin. Recently I have been "cherrypicking" it. Since this is a world coin thread I'd like to show off some of my newfound favorites. Not 100% sure what country the middle one is from, but that one I love the obverse. The reverse of the coins from Australia and Philippines really get me. 20170811_092927.jpg 20170811_092949.jpg

That middle coin is a half-franc from Switzerland. (HELVETIA = Switzerland.)

Swiss coin designs are some of the loveliest in the world and the circulating coinage like that one are some of the longest-running World coin designs in history. Those francs and half-have been struck with the same design since well back into the 1800s (they used to be silver). That's why it has such a cool, old-fashioned look.

    Choose? How? Eeek.

But, that said, I wouldn't mind coming across one of these in a junk box...

Yes. Our friend @Stork has a keen eye. That one is an absolute stunner. She has inspired me to look more at Japanese coins.

Like @Hiddendragon , I would never be able to select a "favorite" coin.
However there are some I am proud to own and plan to keep for a long time.
In this category I would have to place this coin:

    Mexico 1920 20 Centavos Mintage 4,835,000
    1920 Mexico 20 Centavos PCGS MS62 w label 1000.jpg

This was a large, 32.5mm which was only issued in 2 years 1920 and 1935.
Krause list the coin at $45 in VF and $650 in Unc. This was a coin I never thought I would own in Unc. condition. I won this in an auction a couple of years ago for about a third of the $650 price. It pays to be patient.

My dream coin at this time?

Germany 1952D 5 Mark Nurnberg Museum Commemorative
    Mintage 199,000

This is a coin I want to add to my "eagle" collection. The problem is that it's in the same price range as the 20 Centavos in any condition. But, just like the 20 Centavos, if I am patient and keep looking I hope to find one at the right price.

Until then, I have to settle for a restrike.

    Very generous Rob and Steve!
I thought about what my favorite coin in my collection is, and couldn't narrow it down. But then I thought if I could only keep one coin which would it be? Well, then it must be my favorite.
The coin I chose is this (I guess medal would be the correct term in this instance)...
    20170813_091556.jpg 20170813_091630.jpg
It is a silver clad medal minted at the Honolulu Mint, I bought it at the Pearl Harbor gift shop back in Jan. 2014.
It's not my most valuable, but memories are more important in the grand scheme of things than material possessions, JMHO of course.
This is my favorite piece in my personal collection because of the memories it brings back. The entire vacation itself is a great memory, but also meeting a Pearl Harbor survivor was quite humbling, and something that in short time will no longer be possible. The man's name is Everett Hyland and he has been living in Hawaii and connecting with visitors for many years now, sharing his story and basking in the beautiful island sun.
That day I also got to go aboard the Missouri and stand on the exact spot where the war (officially) ended when the treaty between US and Japan was signed.
The most vivid memory of the day though was going out to the Arizona Memorial, envisioning the horror of that (infamous) day while staring down at the hulking mass of what once was an active warship, oil still oozing out of its cracked facade over 70 years later.
Much of my collection is concentrated around the WW2 era, as I find it such a fascinating time in history, and the time and place I bought this piece was the time and place I felt most connected to that history.
I'll continue to add to my WW2 era coinage, but this medal will always remain the centerpiece of that collection.

Nice to see your choice is one of sentiment. I too have one coin in my collection that I consider incomparable to all others., And although I have many of greater value, If I could only keep one I would choose it.

Favorite USA coin that I don't own but wish to someday soon. IMG_0266.JPG IMG_0267.JPG
#1 on my favorite lists is this beautiful intricate copper Siam/aka Thailand coin. Although I am not too sure on the date, but I think it's 40s but I have to say this is amazingly detailed!!

The reverse of the Ike's are awesome but I have to say my favorite modern coin would be this... IMG_2236.JPG
