    Queen Victoria died before that money was actually distributed on Maundy Thursday. She died in January 1901, and those coins were distributed under Edward VII with the Victoria design. Nice transitional set!

    I've always wanted to do a set of these. Finding nicely matched date sets is pretty easy, but they go for quite a premium. There's a complete 1838-1901 set on eBay right now for the low low price of $100k if anyone is interested.

    $100k for that is actually a pretty bad deal. There are 64 sets, so about $1560 per set. Considering you can get individual sets for under $300 each...

    I am selling a few sets in the not too distant future. Should the price be consistent with individual coin values? Is a matched set worth more than the sum of the individual values?

    There is a premium on having a completely matched set, as the threepence is assured to be Maundy and all four coins were distributed to the same recipient, in addition to the matched toning and generally very high grade.

    In fairness it's been a long time since I collected them so things may have changed. That said, when I was collecting them there typically was no premium for "a set" unless that set was in either the original pouch, and those were typically almost unheard of; or the original issue box which was also pretty scarce but could be found sometimes.

    This is because it was, and I imagine still is, too easy to "assemble" sets - which would mean it wasn't a set at all in reality. Of course, even in a pouch or a box, you still have no absolute guarantee that it's an original set for even back then empty boxes could easily be purchased - and still can be today. But finding the specific year you might need can sometimes be difficult.

    Now if you don't know what these boxes look like then go look for them, they are easily found using Google.
