I'm lagging behind a bit, but here's a nice tetradrachm of Caracalla with his angry scowl, issued in Hierapolis (earlier Hieropolis and Bambyce), Cyrrhestica, now the unfortunate city of Manbij in Syria.

Issued 215-217. Obv.: Laureated and cuirassed bust to right. Rev.: Eagle facing, head right, wreath in beak. Lion between its legs. DHMARX EX YPATOC TO D. 27.5 mm, 14.5 gr. Prieur 929.

    Time to add Ls

    Laodicea ad Mare

    worn but satisfying
    [IMG]
SYRIA, Laodicea ad Mare. Septimius Severus & Julia Domna
    CE 193-211
    Æ, 31 mm 18.8 gm
Obv: jugate draped busts right of Septimius Severus, radiate and cuirassed and Julia Domna, set on crescent; countermarks: 1) C(AΓ) within rectangular incuse; 2) COL within rectangular incuse

Ref: SNG Righetti 2114; Howgego 581 and 586
    Ex E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection

The next coin is a local purchase... badly off center, bad condition... but I feel an irrational compulsion to buy almost any coin found in a local store (abundant jewelry-set ancient coins not included).

I have no Ls but I did neglect a K. Koropissos

    49432.l.jpg
CILICIA. Koropissos / Coropissus. Maximinus Thrax (235-238). Ae 31 mm. 12.62g

Rev: KOPOΠICCЄΩN THC KHTΩN MHTPOΠOΛЄΩC; Perseus standing left, holding harpa and severed head of Medusa, and clasping hands with Andromeda standing right; head of Ketos below.

Cf. SNG France 770; cf. SNG Levante 590; cf. SNG Levante Supp. 157.

A much nicer example was sold as CNG e-134 #180. On that specimen the ketos (sea monster) looks like the head of a wolf. Here it looks like a fish carcass!

Wikipedia tells that Dağpazarı is a village in the Mut district of Mersin Province, Turkey. During Byzantine era its name was Coropissus. Situated in the Taurus Mountains, northeast of Mut, it was on the road connecting Mut to Central Anatolia. The population of the village was 287 as of 2012. There are ruins of a church as well as rock tombs around the village. Struck Roman Provincial coins from Hadrian to Valerian.

I'll post my L not sure what purists will say, but I believe this mint was under Roman control at the time this coin was minted. Also It is not in the list of provincials.

That Augustus-Bull Denarius is always a favorite to me... the break JUST misses the Bull, and it looks like a shined-deer Augustus is saying "WHOA! THAT was CLOSE!!!"

Thank you for the kind comments! It is rare for me to have a desirable Imperial or Provincial as I really do not do a good job collecting in the Imperial Era.

LOL, Serapis is willing to come play with the other Serapis coins, but has to be home by 6PM. :D
