Looking for a book to read.

  1. Currently looking for a book to read. Obviously something about coins! Maybe some US coin history but anything would work. I would like something I can have on my phone or tablet but I am not against hard/paperback.

What are you collecting? I recently reread Breens Encyclopedia of Half Cents because I'm working on a mid and late day set.

Go out of your comfort zone and get this:

And then you can cry and feel depressed at how ancient people 2400+ years ago could make far prettier and more interesting coins than anything the US Mint is producing today.

Ouch. I'd have to agree that the US does a terrible job of design today, but they also made some real classics.

If you want to learn about the growth and development of the Mint (1833-1937) then this is a great read.

Roger happens to be a member of CT.

You won't get no argument from me. 18th through early 20th century US coinage is very pretty indeed. I am a big fan of those, and even as an ancient collector I can appreciate those American beauties the mint put out during their glory days.

Everything sadly started to go wrong in the mid-20th century when they abandoned coin designs inspired by classical art and classical themes.

I barely have enough time to get through the Numismatist each month so cannot recommend any books. But if you are not already an ANA member you should join and then you will have access to 125 years of the Numismatist online. I actually have around 200 old printed copies from the 1930s through 1960 and find them very worthwhile.

If you want to learn grading, I would highly recommend Jason Poe's book...The Art and Science of Grading Coins.
