Well, I was just trying to be helpful to anyone including newbies and YN's who might have missed some along the way. What you say is true but not everyone does/did it this way. I missed the 2012 sets due to a life crisis so I'm jumping on this to fill that void along with the 2017's which are lower than Mint cost. Some days, I guess I just can't win everyone over.
The U.S. Mint has definitely taken to catering to bulk buyers and has, I think, forgotten about the average collector to some extent. I agree with Tommy that most of the time you can get what you want in the "secondary market" for a bit cheaper. There are exceptions of course. I mainly stick to the yearly unc and proof sets, with the occasional commemorative purchase. I would note that unlike Coin Vault, the U.S. Mint actually mints the coins they sell.
It's not a matter of winning me over, you're preaching to the choir. I've been doing it so long that to me it is self-evident. Buying the annual sets from the mint and expecting to recover your money or make a profit isn't going to happen (short of a lucky immediate flip). If you can accept that, or if you don't want to wait until they do fall in the aftermarket (which can sometimes take years) then buying from the Mint is fine. If you have the patience to wait, and don't mind taking you lumps on the occasional issue that turns out to be a winner (even if just for awhile) then you can buy on the secondary market. Either way buy because you enjoy what you are buying because you are a collector. Not to make a profit or even hold your value, because you won't. Not pointing fingers, not admonishing anyone, just stating facts.
I just got my answer. He is referring to the Treasury Medal from the 1982 proof sets. NOT worth the 50¢ IMHO
He has probably already sold the 69 and 70 graded coins. He probably refills empty proof holders with the scabs. Come on, nobody takes a bath on proof sets, like that. I have bought several sets(5 coins) of these state and ATB proof silver quarters graded PF69DCAM at mint issue price or slightly above on E-Bay. Nothing worse than some beat up proof coins.
I only buy random things the mint puts out from time to time. Unless I know for a fact a set is going to be a new key, need a birth/graduation/marriage year gift or something I avoid all annual product sets as they are nothing but money pits.
