Coin on Peoples Court

ANOTHER FORUM HAD THIS POSTING. Could not resist sharing in here for anyone that may be interested. I have never seen this show but may have to TVO this one. Back to the game.


''So, I'm a huge fan of the people's court and when I can't watch it live I record it. I was watching it last night and saw a promo for a case that's coming up this TUESDAY. A guy both a coin (gold $20 saint) off ebay valued at $40,000 for $2,600. The coin was slabbed, and it looked like it was in a SGS holder(?). Then they ended up brining an coin expert to give his value of the coin. Then it looked like the judge wasn't too pleased with the defendant.

So, it's going to air on Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007.

If that is the case, SGS, then it would be awesome if about everybody here asks Abon questions about their fraud case that was televised, LOL

 

Think I saw that advertisement. I'm not sure but I think it is one of those Judge things during the day here in Chicago on, again not sure, Channel 23 or 26. Two judge programs run from about 2PM to 5PM on one of those programs.

 

That may actually be worth watching. What if the coin expert they brough in was actually L.B. of abon and SGS fame?

I saw another add for that yesterday. Supposed to be on today. On the Judge show with a lady Judge that is Hispanic and runs for one hour. Can't remember her name. Just can't remember what time. Not sure but I think it is 4PM Chicago time. This is a sign of old age I guess.
There are 3 signs of old age. One is forgetfullness and I can't remember the other two.

It's a syndicated show, so it comes on at different times in different places.

Well, it turned out to be a scamming seller, a stupid buyer, and a sympathetic judge who went the extra mile by hiring her own expert witness.

Seller's "guaranteed return" only covered the date, denomination and mint - no mention of grade.

Buyer "bought with confidence" because of the guaranteed return!

The slab's label was never shown, and the name of the TPG that put an MS65 on a coin that was a 62-63 slider, was never revealed. I don't think it was an SGS slab for two reasons: (1) The coin wasn't certified as MS70, and (2) although the slab looked like it might be a Coin World thingie, there didn't appear to be a gold label.

In the real world of government-operated courts, it would have been up to the plaintiff to provide his own expert, and the court wouldn't have bailed him out by furnishing one at no cost.

According to the expert, a former ANA President whose name I didn't catch, the grey sheet listed MS61 at $875 and MS65 at $26,000, for a 1915 Philly St. Gaudens $20 gold piece.

El Stupido (the buyer) paid $2,600. Unfortunately for him, the Small Claims limit in his state of residence is only $2,000, so his education in how to avoid getting scammed was still costly, since he had to give back the whole coin in order to get back part of his money.

Scamming seller with a buyer that didn't read the whole description.

Should have locked em both up for a while. Course I don't think they'd do that on People's Court but I might actually watch it again if they did.

I could never catch a picture of the slab although the best I could see it all it was, was a simple slab with a blank top. My guess is the grade was what the seller or cosigner said it was and that was how it was advertised on ebay

 

Coin was a 1915 $20 Gold coin. ebay Guarantee by the seller was that the coin was Gold, Phili Mint, date as stated.
True that was Mr. Gans. He stated he was an attorney, coin collector for 45 years, one of the founders of the State Quarters, has written several books and hundreds of articles for Numismatic magazines. True the coin was never clearly shown but the Judge stated it was not a true cerified coin. Only the purchaser stated it was supposed to be MS-65. The expert stated it was MS-62/63. Dug out a book of prices and stated at 62 it would be $810 and at 63 would be $1,750. The seller ended up with his coin and the purchaser ended up with only $2,000 due to the state he lives only allowed $2,000 max for small claims court.

 

Forgot. Mr. Gans stated the book the purchaser brought to court was partially written by Gans.

 

it was interesting.... david l ganz was the expert......i wasn't sure it would rule that way as it was based on grading and the seller hadn't guaranteed grade..only authenticity.....the book they used was the ana grading guide.....interesting case to watch.
