Found this 1989 Penny with lines, any idea what they might be?

Hello, I hope I'm posting this on the right page this time. I found this penny and noticed these lines by Lincoln's face and by the word Liberty, kind of looks like the pillars of the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the penny. Just my opinion of course this is why I'm asking anyone on Coin Talk what your opinion might be.

That is a die Clash, it is where the reverse of the coin was probably pounded a little too hard and it shows through to the obverse. I think that's how it works. Those lines are the memorial building showing through

 

Die clashes happen when there is no planchet in the hub and the dies literally strike each other leaving a faint outline of the other die. They then appear on the coin as subsequent coins are struck with that set of damaged dies. I would think that they carry a bit of a premium, but I have no idea what that may be.

 

Ahhh I would listen to @Kirkuleez that sounds about right. I see a few on eBay going for 5,15,25 bucks give it take a few dollars

 

Are those asking prices or completed prices?

I explained what someone else explained to me. I didn't realize that there had to be a missing plantchet and the die hits each other. I seem to learn as I find errors and I haven't found this yet, so i haven't really read up on it. Next time I'll just read up on it.

Maybe they just forgot to mention the missing plantchet and I saw it how my mind understood it. It's okay. The coin gods will forgive me.

 

-sigh- I give up. You are being ridiculous. Shake my head* people will pay what they want to pay. The 1982 was thought to be worth way more than 18 grand but that's how much it selled for. The fact that I have to explain people will pay what they want to pay for with their money. Whatever amount that is, is not incorrect!!!!

 

I thought you knew that eBay was auction house. Prices are a variety in its self. Things that are worth 50grand can be sold for 5 bucks.

 

Don't be too hard on yourself, Tyler. You've been here for a little while and just got a little tough love. Should you have known this by now? Don't know, but you've been learning. However, it is important that the answers be as accurate as possible so new collectors won't be confused. You never know when a thread will show up in a search.

 

@Murillo Nice example of a clashed die. I found a few of these back in the 80's (the mint apparently had poor QC). Generally, they're worth less than a buck, but it is still nice keeper.

 

Very nice die clash!!! As the name of the error implies the hammer die and the anvil die clash together with no planchet between. This leaves an image of one on the other. Then when a blank is introduced you get your coin. Values can vary greatly. I think this coin would easily go for $5 to $10. Just in case the above urination contest left you confused. I tried to explain as simply as I could. Nice coin

 

At one of the last shows I was at, a dealer had several pages of these and he was selling them for $1. I would have paid $2 but not more. I have to take a picture sometime. @Tyler Graton don't feel too bad, I know I have done the same thing and then had to have a couple of bites of crow...mmmmm...a little like chicken.

 

Wow, I always considered these minor errors. I need to dig mine out and sell them. Probably have about 5 or 6 in AU/MS the that I picked from change 30 years ago.
