I'm about to sell a 1962 US Mint Proof set, original envelope, cello, etc... I'll do a NO RESERVE auction, so that's not the issue, my questions are,

    1) Would I be better off breaking out the individual coins and selling them individually?

    and

    2) Which if any are worth sending off for third party grading / slabbing?

I have never sold a proof set with these considerations before. Personally, I think the Jefferson Nickel is stunning, just a nice even deep rich look to it, I'm wondering what it might grade at if I were to send it off to NGC or PCGS.

The Franklin is also really nice, as is the Lincoln in my opinion. Just one runt in the litter, that blotch on the dime obverse is on the coin, everything else icky appears to be just on the cello, but all of this is of course that's MY opinion, and I don't claim to know anything close to all, otherwise I would not be asking.

I tried my hand at a little poll, hope it makes sense. Also, I'd greatly enjoy and appreciate your sharp eyes and experience on what you think any or each of them might grade at if a slabbing I do go.

    Thanks,
    Bill Purkins

Having bought and sold a few of this particular date, the only advice I would give is this:

Don't grade these unless you think they'd grade Cameo or Ultra Cameo. The rest are pretty common and won't be worth the extra grading fees.

This strikes me as one of those "if you have to ask" type questions, but something also tells me the "questions" have little to do with the true reason behind posting this.

He says he's a dealer, but yet doesn't know what to do with a common date proof set... I'm a bit puzzled, but I tried to just answer his question.

How so? I have never sent a coin off for Third Party Grading before. It might not be worth it. Also, I'm reluctant to take a pair of scissors to a proof set. Call me old fashioned. Don't be so suspicious. It ain't the crown jewels, I mean what's the thing worth MAYBE 30 bucks?
    Oh well,

Wow. Tough crowd. I called myself a dealer because I have coins for sale. Figured that was fair. I just started selling coins online in March.
    Erk,

It depends, Bill. If the half is ultra cameo it can be worth hundreds.

Thank you. Well, they're definitely not that. Appreciate the consideration.

I have assembled a set of 1962 Proof coins (my birth year) in NGC PF-68 Ultra Cameo. Most of them cost more than a set would cost raw.

I wasn't initially, but the time comes when it is impossible to look past the blatant advertising.

What advertising? It's not listed anywhere. Unless you mean my user name? What should I have used as a monicker, KickMe? Geez.
I hope you're not a used Mercedes dealer at least.

Your the only seller, as far as I know, who regularly displays his site on his postings. I think that's a violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the terms of service.

You're much better off selling them as a complete set. Selling them individually may gain a bit more money, but is it really worth the time and hassle for a couple of bucks? Grading them would be a net loss; as Mike described, if they are not cameos, you would spend more grading them than they are worth and you would likely not recover your costs.

OH! Well, nobody told me that. I'll check into that and change it. Appreciate the heads up and the non-acid bath.

Okay, I do not see where I can change my name, but what about our more polite participant here whose image is a bold:

    and ends his messages with:
You can listen to "The Coin Show", a numismatic podcast dedicated to coins and coin collecting on our website -

Radio's a business also, and it lives on advertising. Do you think I should block him? How much caffeine you have each day? Or is it energy drinks?

I could be incorrect here, and would suggest that you check the rules first, but I believe that you are allowed to add your website to your signature, just not within the body of the post.

There. I took the ****.com off the original post. Thanks. Don'tcha just hate not being up on political correctness, the world changes so fast.

Cool. Correct, per my above edit.

Also, I just changed my signature to a more folky "Thanks, Bill." Think of all the keystrokes saved over time. Conservation of energy being what it is, the world will last a little longer. Damn entropy, gonna get us all in the end. But? Through civil chat, we have all banded together, different as we are, to make the world a better place. My eyes are damp. Shucks.

You should know a little something about my podcast before you accuse me of a commercial venture.

That said, look at the right of EVERY page on this forum, you'll see a link to the podcast. The owner of the podcast is not only an admin here, but a big supporter of the forum itself.

Oh, and we don't have any advertising in our show. It's purely educational, and it's not radio, technically, it's an audio-only podcast, hence the radio in the name.
