    One of my latest acquisitions, courtesy of @John Anthony . As you know from this featured article, I'm convinced the image of Marsyas on this coin and others, as well as on the plutei of Trajan, depicts the statue of Marsyas that once stood in the Forum in Rome. The presence of the pedestal on which Marsyas stands on this coin is very strong evidence the image is based on statuary.

    Please post your Alexandria Troas coins, Marsyas coins, Tyche coins, or whatever you feel is relevant!

    Alexandria Troas

    Alexandria Troas (Αλεξάνδρεια Τρωάς; "Alexandria of the Troad") was a Hellenistic-Roman city and port located on the Aegean Sea near the northern tip of Turkey's western coast. The port was strategic when travelling between Anatolia and Europe. Paul the apostle sailed for Europe for the first time from Alexandria Troas and he returned there on his journey from Europe. Troas is mentioned in the Bible in Acts 16:8, 11; 20:5, 6; 2 Cor. 2:12; 2 Tim. 4:13.

    Acts 16:8 - and passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.

    Acts 16:11 - So putting out to sea from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and on the day following to Neapolis;

    Acts 20:5 - But these had gone on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas.

    Acts 20:6 - We sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread, and came to them at Troas within five days; and there we stayed seven days.

    2 Cor. 2:12 - Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened for me in the Lord,

    2 Tim. 4:13 - When you come bring the cloak which I left at Troas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments.

    The city is now in ruins. The site sprawls over an estimated 400 hectares (990 acres); among the few structures remaining today are a ruined bath, an odeon, a theater, gymnasium complex and a stadion.

    You can learn more about the city in these videos:

    I like the provincials of Alexandria Troas because of their bold style, high relief and (often) good condition. Here's a recent acquisition. What a portrait of Gallienus, eh? With this stubbly beard, he looks more like his father here.

    AE Gallienus (253- 268). Alexandria in Troas. Obv: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust r. Rev: Lupa Romana standing left, suckling Romulus and Remus. COL AVG/ TRO. 20.5 mm, 5.20 gr. Bellinger A459.
