Been awhile since I posted a coin I have bought but its due to the lack of anything that has caught my eye in detail and artwork in my opinion. Lot of the Canadian coins of late have just been garbage. Anyways finaly they brought out one that I liked personally which is the $4 dinosaur series that they will be doing over the next 4 years (1 a year). This years one (2007) is a Parasaurolophus fossil. According to my friend you can actually go see this in Alberta and that the slab of rock is protected by glass or some type of protective surface and you can touch it and such. Anyways about the coin. Its 99.99% pure silver at a weight of 15.87g proof coin. This is the first time I have seen them use this technique of tarnishing the silver to get a background and because of this method every single coin is unique. Not one is alike. The Canadian Mint calls it a selective aging method. In my opinion it looks very nice and its been awhile since a coin has poped out and caught my eye since the etched maple leaf coin (which I showed you guys way back ). Can't wait to see what they bring out for the next years but I am hoping a triceratops one of the years since thats my favourite dino. Attached a picture.
I think that's very cool. I have collected some recent Canadian coins (the holographic ship coins, the colored hummingbird coin and a few others). I think you've just given me an idea for a gift for my two sons.
I paid $42 cdn for it. Didn't buy it for its silver content thought but its looks so huge premium lol since not even an ounce. Also there is only 20,000 minted which I forgot to mention in my first post. I have a good feeling about this coin going up in value since only reason I got that one was because my friend kept it aside. An other dealer came in and bought the other 4 so when you see a dealer buying off a dealer something is going on lol. Only time will tell though!
Wow, thats a nice design. I agree though, most of canadas recent designs havent been the best. Keep us updated if you can, I will be keeping my eye out.
I love this coin, and the rock "toning" really looks great in your hands! From the Royal Canadian Mint News Release: "Introducing an exciting new collector coin series, the RCM is issuing the first of four 99.99% fine silver coins depicting dinosaur fossils, celebrating Western Canada's reputation as a treasure trove of fossil specimens. Alberta's Parasaurolophus, a crested, duck-billed species, is featured on this $4 silver coin, to which a selective finish has been applied to the reverse design, to give the impression of a real stone fossil. As this process also creates variations in tone and colour, no two coins will be alike. Designed by Canadian artist Kerri Burnett of Sherwood Park, Alberta, the coin has a suggested retail price of $39.95 and is limited to a mintage of 20,000. Other species to watch for in coming years are: Triceratops (2009); Tyrannosaurus Rex (2009); and Dromaeosaurus (2010)."
Well I am happy there will be a triceratops but why are two coins being released in 2009 and no 2008. Wonder if thats a typo.
I also think that's a typo and that we will see a 2008 dinosaur. The text comes directly from their July 3rd news release: http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/July2007/03/c2833.html
Especially since the mintage is going to be limited to 20,000. I see that they are going to come out with a triceratops, I cant wait to see that one.
Please don't hyjack my thread. This thread is discussion about Dino set and this dino coin shown. Especially when I dislike holograph and sticker coins. Thanks
i was looking up this coin on the web and someone said "look theres a dinosaur on both sides" thats so mean!, yet kinda funny
