    Perhaps a re-plating issue?

Thanks Kentucky , you're the first to comment. I don't know what "re-plating" is though.

Sorry, 1943 cents were steel plated with zinc and the zinc got dull, wore quickly and let the steel rust. This made the coins look baaaaaaaaaaad, so some people came up with the idea of re-plating these coins with zinc. That made them look nice, but softened out a lot of the features the way putting on a coat of paint does. I just thought that the look of your coin might be a plating issue. Others will comment, I'm sure. Happy collecting

Yup, this is the state they are generally found in, probably one of the reasons someone started re-plating them.

It is supposed to be the reverse of what many people consider one of the most beautiful coins the USA ever made, a Mercury or Winged Liberty dime. The reverse is a fasces, a bundle of rods with a projecting ax blade, carried by a lictor as a symbol of a magistrate's power, and used as an emblem of authority in Fascist Italy.

That it is a most beautiful coin I agree. On it's way 2x5$ rolls purchased yesterday. A company in Vancouver USA.
