I've looked on several sites and could not find a variety/error description but looking closely at this Merc and comparing the date on it with others, it appears the upper right corner of the 8 is a straight edge and appears to originally have been a 7.

Anyone heard of this error before? 1918 Merc.jpg 1918 Merc Date.jpg

I've personally never heard of a 18/7 overdate, I may be mistaken but my best guess is that a ding to the northeastern portion of the 8 gives the illusion of a 7 overdate.
The 42/1 overdate is the only one that comes to mind for me.
Well see what more knowledgeable posters think.

Looks to perfect of a squared corner to be a hit

Also look at the top left corner of the round in the 8 little squared there too

There are 18/17 nickels and quarters.
This would be a very valuable discovery if it was the first dime to be 18/17.
I can see the 7. But I don't see the stem of the 7 through the bottom hole in the 8.

Unfortunately, your images are not good enough to have an opinion. BTW, I have been looking for an 18/7 dime for over forty years. If one studies a chart of the U.S. coin series by date and mint as I've done, one thing that "pops-out" is the fact that some dates show more than one overdate on different denominations.

Send it to ANACS or ICG as the other two TPGS are reluctant to "bite the bullet" and say a new rarity exists until another is found...and they :bucktooth: are considered to be the "experts." :hilarious::hilarious:

Is there any way to brighten up and enlarge the date only picture?

Thanks everyone for the great support and input. It may just be me but I asked another person to look at it and if you look very closely (I will attempt better pics) the top of the 8 is flat and there's what looks like a double edge (7 very slightly higher than the 8) and the stem of the seven can be seen the right lower portion of the 8. I will send it off and if it is a new error I will let everyone know!

Here are 2 more pics and I wish I was better with paint.net than I am, maybe someone could give me some pointers on what to do step by step?

I believe you can clearly see the 7 in photo #3.

    Thoughts? 1918 Merc Date 2.jpg 1918 Merc Date 3.jpg

    It is interesting.

An 18/17 dime would not show the 7 through the bottom loop of the 8. The 7 on the 1917 dime drops almost straight down, not at an angle as on the nickel and quarter. SO it would pass through the right side of the loops of the 8 and there wouldn't be that much visible.

I agree with everyone on here there where in all the years of the other coins so why wouldn't they have done it on the dime on accident it's just that no one has found any

And then here I pasted a 7 from an actual Mercury Dime and then wanted to circle the points so everyone can see that it has to be a 7 underneath the eight

Sf11 dude I believe if we both come forward they may have recognized the error.... I had just came into this a few weeks ago my grandma found it on her porch and we weren't sure why the relative saved it in the plastic holder because it appeared to be worn but then when I examined it closer I saw something funny with the 8 then realized it was a 7 underneath amazing
