No surprise. It was widely advertised and still is by dealers. It's the only cent that's ever had the "P" mint mark. Prices are outrageous and is difficult in my area to find them in change. It's new, so everybody is hoarding them thinking they'll be worth a fortune in a few years.

The US Mint did not advertise this. They were struck with the "P" to commemorate the Mint's 225th anniversary. The Mint thought this was a good way to see how long the public took to notice the "P" mintmark. Not long. Since there is a bill in Congress to eliminate the cent one can only deduct this was a test to see if the cent would be missed. What do you think?

No...I didn't know they existed until I looked it up today after finding it. My naiveity doesn't mean anything, I only started paying attention to coins within the last 2 months.

Funny how you start the first paragraph with "It was widely advertised & still is.." then the second paragraph begins with "The US Mint did not advertise this".. I know the coin was released into circulation quietly, I read that today after finding it. I'm into this hobby for a whole 2 months now & 3 months ago I didn't know anything about coins except D=Denver Mint, S=San Francisco, no mm means Philadelphia, & be on the lookout for silver. Today I found my first 2017 P cent & my first 1971D Kennedy Half Dollar DDO (which I posted in Error Coins forum).

Congrats. Still looking for them in change. Not very common here on the west coast to get Philadelphia mint coinage, at least not very quickly.

Both statements are sort of true. The US Mint didn't pre-release the information, they left it to be discovered and then said why. WHEN it was discovered, it made a HUGE splash in the numismatic press and even some spill over into the general media.

Never found any in change, we only get "D's" out here. I figure by the time I get one it will be all scratched up. A friend on the east coast mailed me a couple of MS ones.

My TD bank here in New Jersey has them by the box.

They are all over here in NYS.... even the 'take a cent, leave a cent' trays are full of them....I picked up a couple early in the year and put them away... no real value, just for posterity.

I found some in 'take a cent, leave a cent' (and I traded out for them, not just 'take'). I have 2/3 roll of 2017-P cent from change now and three rolls acquired from store merchants who let me "purchase" them from them. My bank has no desire to get me any rolls or boxes!!!!

@Vegasnay welcome to CT...some of us here (myself included) have other lives besides coin collecting.

Come to my town, Mike. They are at about every merchant in town where you get change at buying something. Where the merchants get them from, IDK. No bank I have been to has any rolls OR boxes.

Wondering why you said that to Vegasnay when what he said has nothing to do with anyone's job or life "beside coin collecting"?

Bought a few rolls a couple of months ago, pd $3.00 a roll plus shipping. I figured I'd never see them out here in CA. Gave most to friends and kept a rool for myself. I have a few friends back East they are still looking. One friend said his bank would have to order a 100 dollars worth to get them

I think they will end up being called the "P penny" and
First he is a she...and second, well, you'll figure it out.

@u812? I was defending her...not everyone is "in the know" about the latest coin descriptions and nuances. Best to all.
