Strike doubling then recoated the new coating makes the md stand out more. Notice the 4 and 1 also shows signs .
That's my take on it.....I'm making good this judgement on your images. That said see if others are in agreement.
Reprocessed cents such as this often display what appears to be "doubling", but is simply an artifact of the plating. Nothing special, unfortunately.
"Reprocessed" is a term usually applied just to steel cents, but a 44-D (or any other coin) certainly can have been or be plated, yes.
