is that some kind of die crack or ??? around the date and stars at 5 o'clock There doesn't seem to be any indications on the reverse.

OK but image quality is reduced when you do that. Here it is.

Is it raised or flush with the surface? Hard to tell perspective from the pic, but if it's flush, it might be residue from being dipped.

definitely NOT just residue. The marks are lower than the surrounding field. As though the whole date and the field immediately behind it are imprinted deeper than the surrounding field

I'm thinking it was mounted, at one time ..

It looks like the leftover residue from a cleaning to me, too!

mounting does not explain the depth of the indentation. and there would be marks on the reverse side if it was post mint I would thinnk

Look at the outside of the rim, on both sides .
To me, they look filed ...

Could of came out of a belt buckle ....

It may have been really toned, then when it got dipped the marks were left where the toning was, just a wild guess.

I agree with rick. I am not the most knowledgeable, there must have been some kind of metal on top of it and over time it may have pounded the numbers down. I kind of find it impossible for a dent to be on a die without greatly affecting the fields. Something had to pound those numbers equally over time. The black marks are from the differences in metals

It never dawned on me the first look but this seems very plausible.

Wouldn't a dent on a die appear as a mountain not a valley?

I can see the rims are filed on both sides .
Came out of something, that's for sure ...

Silver, as soft as it is, this might have been a pressure point for the mount.

Why would a mounting cover up the date? And if it did, I would think that it would sqeeze or squash the date also. A Die Crack or Break usualy run in straighter lines that.
Is there an Indent between the neck and stars at 7o'clock?
