1798 bust dollar

This is a coin I am considering bidding on,not going to say which auction,
I think i have a chance.
Was wondering what grade others would assign it.
Please advise.

I'm with GDJMSP -- the date looks wrong to me. I am anything but an expert on these coins though...

Even if it were real, the gashes, rim dings, and other problems would have me running scared.

This is an auction I would PASS on. You can do better.

p.s. if you are going to try and buy these coins, but don't have the ability to spot counterfeits, you might consider buying one in a net graded ANACS slab. THat way you are ensured of getting a real coin. Good luck!

 

CoinFacts has another 1798 with a shield reverse.

Was there something else that made you think it was counterfeit?

 

The nose ,the hair curls ,the date ,the stars - It screams fake -:loud: RUN RUN,RUN

I was the seller of this coin

I was alerted to this post from another PCGS member so this is my first post here.

This coin is 100% Genunie. I would offer 100% refund if ANACS did not authentic it.

As this auction has ended and I have not relisted it it really does not matter so this is just for the record.

It is a B-8 (BB-125) and a late die state. Probably BB D/S IV. I am 100% positive the coin is not fake.

I hope this clears this up for everyone.

I agree, it doesn't look genuine. The word "UNITED" on the reverse isn't even close to being in the right alignment.

Look at the late stage die crack at 5:00 O clock runing from the rim through the C into the Shield.

100% real

I think Im gonna agree with seatedime on this one. The wear is in the appropriate areas as well, if you will notice the wear areas on the other pics posted. This one just has considerably more wear in the same areas.

There are so many varieties that I could never tell, unless researched.

Reiver has a good reference on the varieties for those who care to read it.
(I don't, I am not going to collect them, and then, only certified, I don't trust myself enough).

 

A very good lesson in teamwork

I think this is a good lesson in teamwork, and education. Alsi, I noted the post did not have the auction, therefore did not disclose the seller. I think that is a good thing, I will do that in the future when I question things. I have been wrong also, and it is unfair to put the honesty of a seller in question, especially when only asking.

I have no knowledge of Bust Dollars at all, I couldn't spot a real from a fake.


But I do know this seller very well (not personally). And he would absolutely never sell a fake coin.

He is very knowledgable, and I don't believe he has any need to try and pass off a fake Bust Dollar.

 

That's great that you're here to vouch for his character. But seeing how you just joined today and this is only your third post, how much credence should we give that statement.
