Hi there! New to coin talk and coin collecting in general, I came across this 1998 D penny and I've never seen anything like it before. I'm wandering if anyone else possibly has? Is this an error? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!
First, welcome to Coin Talk. This is what is usually called a "drier coin", i.e., a coin which has been tumbled in a drier or some other device for an extended period of time. The repeated impacts flatten out the edges and fold the rim outward. Eventually the front and rear rims would contact each other. It is not an error; it is simply a damaged coin.
