Been collecting coins for over 35 years. Grandfather got me started, also left me nice collection. Over last 35 years have purchased 99% of my coins from mint, proof, unc sets including mint sets, silver, gold and platinum. Have never sold a coin in my life:whistle: Figure when I retire will start selling on Ebay and such.
Me I have sold just about every other type of collectable LOL but never a coin, I have traded a few and given away a pile but never sold one
I haven't been able to sell one yet either. Its hard to part with them. I have 3 that I am planning to sell soon though.
Well, while I am such a packrat with coins, there have been two times in my life that I've sold coins from my collection. 1. When I first got married, I felt so guilty about the disproportionate amount of debt I brought to the table, I sold a large part of my paper money collection. While I still kept the best pieces, this was during the late nineties and of course hind sight is 20/20 (I had a complete Speelman-White Signature collection and it would have appreciated alot more than the interest rates on that debt). 2. Just recently when I found several hundred Washington Dollars with the missing edge inscription. There was no way I was going to keep that many in my collection. But as a bonus, it has enabled me to search as many coins per week as time allows. I don't count this as selling coins, but I do occasionally turn a profit on ebay with Eisenhowers that I pick up at the banks.
I have never sold a coin yet. Can't bear to part with them. LOL Actually, I don't have any coins that are really worth much to begin with. I've traded a bunch, and bought a bunch. Got me a nice set of Ikes and SBA's thanks to gatzdon. (Thanks again) I really only collect for personal pleasure, not for profit. I'm OCD and sometimes I need to know when enough is enough.
I've never sold any coins either. The problem now is finding a place to put them! I've filled up one safe and am looking at buying another...much to my wife's dismay. So, if you're married, the trick seems to be, for every $1,000 in coins you buy, you better buy at least $2,000 in jewelry for her! That takes up safe room too. Guy~
I am guilty of this transgression as well. My wife has caught on that I don't really plan on parting with any of my "precious".
I sold two nice unc 1920s mercury dimes when i was like 14 years old. I dont know why But I still regret it till this day.
The only coins I've ever sold have been some silver-clad Kennedy halves. I do, however, have many low-value world coins that I need to sell or trade sometime soon. My big plastic bin is getting of little boxes and pill jars of coins!
It surprises me how many people have not sold any of there coins. I have parted with a few of mine, but I mainly sell the ones I buy with that in mind to help finance my collection. Mainly common silver and modern commems.
I've sold coins for sometime now, and I think I learned more about the market, grading, when I was selling coins more so than when I was buying. There is almost a new feel to the hobby when you sell. It gives you a better feel on what is a good price and what is going to be a loser. Speedy
That is WHY I sell coins every now and then. It is very educational. I had a concern that I was delusional about the value of my coins. I was concerned that when it came time to sell I would be in for a big bad awakwning way down the road, so I tested the waters and sold a few. I've been pleased with the results. Always a win-win for both parties.
I have sold coins, or a coin set, twice. Both times because I needed the money. First time, I sold a 10th Anniversary Set with the 1995 W Silver Eagle Dollar coin. I got a good price for it, but to this day, I regret selling it. I will probably NEVER have a chance to get another one. WAH WAH!!!! LOL The second time, I sold 4 gold coins that I had. 2 proof 1/10th oz. Eagles, 1- 1/10 oz. uncirculated Eagle, and a FDR Commerative 1/10 oz. coin....1997 I believe. Those I don't miss much. But that 10th Anniversary Set......man, what a dummy!! Oh well.......brain tumors ya know!! I still got a safe full of other "stuff" though. I don't plan on selling anything else UNLESS I need the money for something. Thanks for the thread. swick
I've never walked into a dealer and said, "I want to sell this." I've had offers made without any request, but I've never sold (even though the price was good). I HAVE traded up, so to speak. A Fine coin to AU, that sort of thing. I have also divested myself in trades of things like "junk silver" Mercs to purchase coins, but that's it.
Yep....1875 S 20 cent piece PCGS MS63 blue Green toning...beautiful coin...offer was too good to pass up! RickieB
