Hello everyone , I am newbie here and newbie in coin too I got that coin pic and I am trying to identify that coin without results That coin is in half in bad condition and i have problem with read letters. I can only suppose that is a Greece's coin, maybe on one side is Zeus's head and on other side i see inscription "...OGST-SVP..." ...and that's all. It's made of gold (test about 0.900). I don't know what that coin is. If someone can help me i will be grateful for that help. update (sharpen for more details :smile ): Peter
I don't know anything about coins from this era but I can tell that it isn't Greek, it doesn't have Zeus on it, and the first picture is upside down. I also think the OGST is OAST I believe the second letter is a medieval A. (But I could be wrong) If you note the figure on the second picture you will see that he has a halo and his scepter is topped with a cross. A Christian image which may represent the King as head of the church, or possibly a representation of Christ himself, although I normally associate that with Byzantine coinage and I don't think this is from that period. (Usually the Christ image is much larger)
Think it's from one of the German states, maybe Austria - an early gold gulden I believe. Will have to dig thru the books to find it. Pretty sure the legends read - obverse - PMTO.UNT IOD--TN ( the -- indicates blanks I can't make out ) reverse - RET.A.I LOGST.SUI
Thought so, gold gulden - Germany, Mainz Johann II 1397 - 1419; minted at Bingen or Hochst. St John standing; reverse arms of Mainz-Nassau and small arms of Cologne and Trier. Fr.1616
Thank you for good direction ( i was totally in wrong place ) Yes, that is gold gulden I found almost the same avers http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Fr_1617-Schlegel_19var.jpg . Now it should be lite easier to find more info about that coin. But if someone has smt, pls put some info here ;> Peter
Something like that Have you a reverse photo/picture ? On my photo I see only one arms. And that looks like arms of Rheda-Wiedenbruck ( http://www2.rheda-wiedenbrueck.de/stadtportrait/sp_auto_12328.cfm ) only it's looks like reflection in the mirror. But mb you have better source edit: ok, now i see there one big arms and two very small :]
At last I have found the same. http://www.muenzauktion.com/siee/item.php5?lang=en&id=70813002&catid=62&curr=USDEUR and next: http://someoldcoins.org/saur/1/1238.htm http://coins.azz.cz/showmince.php?GroupID=7&MinceGroupNr=233&lng=2 So, on sites are all info. Price is 575$ ...dunno is that good deal. Is there any price in your source GDJMSP ? btw. Someone told me that "The coin was minted 1413 - 1417" and " this is a Goldgulden from the Erzbistum Mainz." edit: http://www.peus-muenzen.de/aukdo/Au...Id=5&ik1=00027&ik2=Auktion_372-373&id1=622683 http://www.peus-muenzen.de/aukdo/Au...Id=5&ik1=00027&ik2=Auktion_372-373&id1=622126 on 1'st site price was 395 euro ...on next 200 and 250 ...so i guess that 575$ was good price for vendor
About the only thing I didn't tell you in my first post was the value. Germany, Mainz - this tells you the country and the province or state in that country that issued the coin Johann II 1397 - 1419 - this tells you the ruler and the years of his reign, the coin was issued under his authority minted at Bingen or Hochst - this obviously tells you the mints that produced this coin in the province of Mainz. St John standing; reverse arms of Mainz-Nassau and small arms of Cologne and Trier - this tells you the design of the coin Fr.1616 - this is the Friedburg number for this coin. It comes from the book Gold Coins of the World - Ancient Times to Present by Friedburg - 7th Edition. As for value, I'd say it is worth about $400.
