I can't see any damage the seller says it's that small mark near the chin. How much value is lost on such a minor mark? Thank you for a response and the education. This is what the seller says "Up for auction is an amazing 1798 Draped Bust Dollar with almost uncirculated details. This coin is graded by NGC and is guaranteed authentic. The only damage that I can see on the coin is a fine "nick" at the chin of lady liberty. This is my opinion only. Please review the pictures and make an accurate assessment on the value of the coin in its condition. A very rare coin in this condition that would be the highlight of any collection!" In my best guess, I think it's been repaired. Look at the reverse to the left of the tails feathers and just below the arrows, there is a circle. This could have been a repaired hole. I also *think* I see the same circle on the obverse between the L & I of LIBERTY. Also, there is a ding on the reverse in the star field above UNUM.
I see what you're saying Beefer. I didn't notice that. Thank you. Any opinion on what I my be worth? I really want a 1778 or 1799 silver dollar. It's one of my favorite coins. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think I see 3 stars completely missing from the reverse, and some remnants of a missing fourth that I don't believe resulted from a weak strike . . . the bust is full on the opposite side of the coin. I also see an obvious mark on the reverse, and what appears to be another larger mark or scrape through glare on the holder, above and left of the eagle's beak.
B-31/BB-115 is supposed to have really weak stars. The big divot in the field where the stars should be is probably the damage that's given on the label, and the small one by the chin isn't helping (although by itself, would probably simply net the grade down a notch). If you really like this design and really want one, get a wholesome VF20 of one of the die pairs that comes well struck.
There's a dig under Liberty's chin, and a corresponding dig on the reverse in the stars... like someone held it, pinched, with something.
Also appears to be some damage near C & A in America and some smaller marks under the letters in United.
That variety does have a weak strike and I do agree with the VF20 comment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
