As a rule, I don't use paper wrappers, and I prefer to use square coin tubes (as opposed to clear plastic) when I'm storing same date/mintmark uncirculated coins. The plastic tubes are cheaper, but the problems I've encountered with them is that they can crack easily and coins often get stuck in them. Chris
I use both, depending on what it is. ASE and other BU govt issued silver and anything for circulation in mint state goes in the square plastic tubes. Older finds from circulation and junk silver goes in paper. It's all preference really. I look at the square plastic tubes as good protection to keep coins safe from the elements. I look at the cheap clear plastic tubes as a pain for the reasons Chris mentioned. I figure if it doesn't need to stay pretty why spend the money on the plastic? Those go in the paper. Granted, paper protects from nothing, but they all go in a safe with desiccant packs for humidity control.
I use the square for my own storage but use the cheaper plastic ones when I sell to save a little money.
Good points by all! Cpm called it with the clear tubes. They stick. I don’t mi d them for every day usage only because I can’t afford a whole lot of the square ones. I purchased a bag of the clear used ones off of eBay, used, and they did well. There were a few of the square ones in the bag and let me say that they are much nicer for storage. They stack nice in my safe.
I use the round coin tubes because they're cheap. But they do occasionally cause coins to stick at the bottom, especially with cents. Halves are fine.
