Terrific presentation and a cool Republican!!! That's another 'type' (kneeling Sicily) that I seem to have missed out on at auction
Very nice addition to your bottle cap collection, DR. Now that you have some Seleukids and a Republican, you might want to consider a Macedonian bottle cap next . MACEDONIAN KINGDOM Time of Philip V and Perseus AE Serrate. 10.0g, 25mm. Unknown Macedonian mint, circa 185-168 BC. SNG Cop 1294. O: Diademed head of Poseidon right, trident over shoulder. R: MAKE-ΔONΩN, club; monograms below left and right; all within oak wreath.
Z! Have you been holding out on us? I don't recall seeing this before and didn't know there were any such Macedonian "bottle caps". It is extremely cool!
These were contemporary with the first Seleukid serrate bronzes, but apparently didn't have a very large or particularly long run. The stuff one finds under one's bed...
Thank you for your kind comment, Curtisimo! Thank you also for your posts which are always superbly crafted, fascinating, and informative!
I have the fouree version of my bro's bottle cap Roman Republic denarius. Bro's: Mine: Funny thing is, neither of us knew the other was getting a L. Roscius Fabatus denarius. Erin
Good question, chrsmat! Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think aquillias is a standard bearer. A symbolic figure of the Roman military.
If my "poor classical latin" still works (and should! because I have a history bachelor's degree and work for museums!! (thanks parents!!!)): maybe maybe??? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquila_(Roman) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquilifer
It's an ancestor referencing type. The info below is from one of @Valentinian's pages: BMC says "probably the grandson of the consul of the same name who in B.C. 101 conducted a war against the slaves in Sicily." Crawford says the moneyer is not otherwise known but "His reverse type alludes to the beneficia conferred on Sicily by his grandfather, Mn. Aquillius, Cos 101, responsible for ending the slave war."
