Is this what Dellars Darkener does to copper? Follow the link. Just curious cause this seller seems to always have large cents that look dark like this. Just curious. Now to check my link - it seems none of the other ebay links are working for me. Nope even my link does not work. Thanks
I looked at 7 coins he has available - not one looks natural. Some of them appear to have been lightly polished. I suspect he is also using a coin conditioner.
from one one his feedback comments BEWARE BUYERS!! SOLD ME AN ALTERED COIN HE SAID WAS ORIGINAL,COST ME BIG TIME!! Reply by donv2 (Sep-21-06 14:32): I did not sell an altered coin. This is libel he had better find a good lawyer. Follow-up by coinmaster!! (Sep-24-06 08:38): MY L. CENT from you came back in PCGS bodybag as altered.BUYERS GET COINS GRADED
None of those coins is natural. They have all been recolored. Notice how the coins have wear, but the color on the coin is consistant, even on the wear spots.
Any guess as to how he has recolored them? To me they look like some type of oil. I have never bid on one of these coins, but have been seeing them regularly and just got curious as to what he used on them. I have never like the looks of these coins.
They do all look like they have been recolored. I would suspect he is selling off some pieces he has purchased from another collector. I know I've never seen things like that in his case at a show. Yes Don is a small time dealer who specializes in early copper. He is very knowledgeable about it. I've known Don for many years and I've bought some good pieces from him. I didn't look at all the pieces he is selling but on the ones I did he makes no claim that the coins are original. Frankly 7 negs in 7 1/2 years and probably close to 10,000 transactions (He has left almost that many feedback for others) Seems like most people are satisfied with him.
Yes. I sent him a message through ebay asking if one was colored. He replied that it was all natural. I do not believe it.
