What I have learned is this is a great hobby and you really have to educate yourself. Or ask for advice and educate yourself. I'm doing both. I've read 1982 D small date is a valuable coin. I may have one. But I still don't have the eye skills, that will take time. Can anyone tell me what they think? If not no worries, this is a great group, I check it everyday now.
I haven't checked if it is small date yet, but even if it is, it is not worth anything more than the others. There are some valuable small dates, but 1982 doesn't have any.
Never mind, I just read that there is an extremely valuable 1982d small date. Yours does look like a small date, based on the distance between the date and rim. But it easily could just be a weak strike on the rim. Is it copper or zinc? If it is zinc, then it isn't the real deal.
For American coins, the INVALUABLE RESOURCE is the "Red Book" - "A Guide Book Of United States Coins". Goes into the most valuable varieties.
I have five 1982 Ds, 4 are copper and one zinc. They all look like small dates to me that's my problem. I'd love to have them appraised but it's a gamble. Thank you for your reply. Youtube says but I don't think I'm that lucky.
+1. A must have for every US coin collector. Just keep in mind the pricing is a bit inflated, the same is true for PCGS priceguide (actual seems to be about 60-70% of what they claim). Check closed auctions on eBay to see what the market is paying for the example you're researching to get more realistic actual value. Side note- you probably already know this, but grade is very important when determining value. I use the Photograde app by PCGS to help ballpark my finds. HH!

I have a ton of 82's now, I went back and looked. Which makes me think they can't be that special. Thank you. I might have a winner. I have a scale but I screwed it up. I need to get it calibrated. But I can tell the difference between zinc and copper. It's just not precise enough for this, anymore.

You can probably still use your scale. It should still be able to compare the weight of different cents.
I really appreciate this group. I may have a coin problem. I bought a new scale and some coin albums tonight. That will help. I'm after this 1982 D and a 1969 S. But my favorites are wheats. I have 7 good candidates.
I just drop them and listen to the sound, copper cents make a high pitch ring. It works 99% of the time.
