One day I'll run out of FH to post. Until then heres another one from Antioch. It's officina 15 and 7/15 need for my officina set. It's a bit chunky at 6.1g, but only 21mm wide. Constantius II AE 2, (6.1g // 21mm) obverse D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right; reverse FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, Gamma in left, soldier spearing Horseman, hair in braids, bearded, reaching back towards soldier, AN epsilon I in ex Antioch 132 Also picked up a couple "snack" coins. Heres one of them: Constantius II AE3. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust left, globe in hand / FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, emperor bare headed and in military dress standing, holding standard with chi-rho on banner in his right hand, resting left hand on shield, two bound captives wearing Phrygian helmets kneeling, leaning to the left before him, star in left field. Mintmark SMNA Nicomedia RIC VIII 71
Love those drapery folds on the top coin reverse. For my money during the fourth century, no one beats the Antioch die engravers.
If you're like me with my Flavians, happily that won't be any time soon. BTW, that's a very nice FH. And keep 'em comin'!
Thanks all! Yeah Antioch has a lot of impressive coin. At one point I thought about collecting Flavians too. I still might
Heres the other I was waiting for. Constantius II Antioch, AE 2 4.72g 22mm DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, horseman standing left, spearing a fallen horseman who is bearded, hair in braids, clutching the horse's neck. Γ in left field. Mintmark AN Gamma. RIC VIII Antioch 135 Gratian AE3, Rome. DN GRATIA-NVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / SECVRITAS-REIPVBLICAE, Victory walking left, holding wreath and palm. Mintmark SM leaf RB. RIC IX Rome 24c/28b, type xiv
Nice @randygeki , cool coins. I saw your Gratian, and I have one of those "strange" (to me), dragging captive type reverse... RI Gratian 367-383 CE AE 17mm Reduced Folles Leading captive XP banner labarum
Thanks guys. The Gratian was at the local shop and caught my eye and was very cheap. I let it sit there for a couple weeks though, to let someone else have a chance to grab it. When it was still there on my last visit, I picked it up.
LOL, the patience of Job... If it were in my wheelhouse, I would not let it sit for a couple weeks like you are able... I would had snared it immediately.
Theres so few ancients at the local shop that I'd feel bad picking all the nicer ones up and I was on the fence about getting that one anyway. Theres very few collectors in town to though, so I knew it'd be there still lol.
I don't have a Constans for this issue and my Constantius II from this officinal isn't as nice as either of these lovely examples.
