TPG's and slabbin of coins is not the be all and end all of collecting. Take for example 1885CC Morgan Dollars. There are approximately 44,000 certified by either NGC or PCGS. We know for a fact that there were 148,285 Mint state 85CC's released after the GSA halted their release in 1964. Why haven't a larger portion of these known mint state coins been certified. Think about it.
Those GSAs are a different story though because they are already verified and therefore liquid without certification. Had they not been in GSA slabs already people looking to sell would be much better off spending the money to slab first because not many people want to spend $600+ on a raw coin unless they see it in hand. I agree slabbing coins is not the end all be all but it does raise red flags when higher value coins are raw (that's my main issue with GSC I don't even care about their pictures, I see issues with $3,000+ coins being sold raw when they KNOW they could sell to a larger group for more money if they paid $30 to have it slabbed and they still don't).
This 1862 Half from Philly is a very tough date (proofs excepted). I'm curious . . . is anyone else having a really hard time buying nice better date US coins lately?
<br /> Thought this was the gold Kennedy before i looked at the date. Nice coin! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I guess the meaning is much the same . . . the tougher they get to locate, the tougher it becomes to afford them.
